Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Overpowering chocholate. This one is almost to the point that I wouldnt call it beer. However, the chocholate is of high quality, and the brew is tasty so it gets good marks. Tastes good and gets you drunk.

Draft at Capone’s. Deep brown to ebony with a soft, foamy caramel head. Big nose of melted chocolate, and a nutty roastiness. Flavor was alot of rich chocolate, much more than I’ve ever gotten in an imperial stout. Pretty impressive in that regard. Despite these merits, I felt sick and sluggish toward the end of my 9oz. snifter of this. That, to me, is the eternal downfall of most imperial stouts: I just don’t have it in me to finish the blessed thing. There should be a ratings criteria for "drinkability" or "does it make you feel sick" or something to that effect. I suppose those points should be deducted from the overall score if the beer TASTES good but makes you feel sick due to how heavy it is, but I’m just saying.

22oz. Bottle: Pours the darkest of brown w/ just a wisp of a brown head. A swirl of the glass reveals a small brown head that recedes quickly. Aroma yields mostly roasted malts, milk choc., some dark fruitiness & a slight bit of alcohol. Flavor: Dark roasted malts quickly take a back seat to sweet chocolate fading into a slighty bitter hoppiness towards the end. Smooth brew, nice velvety mouthfeel w/ perfect carbonation. Also gives that nice warming feeling as it travels to the belly. A quick check of the bottle reveals 11%, nary a hint of that in the flavor. I had high expectations for this one & it didn’t disappoint...yum!.............**Draft: This is even better then the bottled version. You can smell the sweet chocolate aroma from across the table, it’s just insane! All the strengths seem amplified on tap. Wow!! AR: 10 App: 5 Flav: 9 Pal: 5 Ov: 17 Tot: 4.6**

Pours a truly opaque brown/black with a thin tan head. I swear, you can literally smell this from across the room. Aroma is chocolate-soda like...very reminiscent of some soda I had as a child, but richer and more flavorful. Taste is initially roasted malts, but turns quickly to sweet chocolate...some bitter chocolate and bittering hops as well, and I’d have to say some milk and nut flavor in there as well. There is a bit of alcohol evident as well, which made me look at the bottle and subsequently open my eyes pretty wide when I saw this was 11% ABV (I was guessing 6.5-7%). Surprisingly bitter aftertaste took me for a loop. Palate is very good...goes down like smooth Nestle Quik (albeit not as chuggable, due to a bit more carbonation than I’d like to see). If you’re looking for lots of dimension, this isn’t a great beer for you, but if you’re looking for a good chocolate bomb...head here; I’ve yet to have anything more chocolatey!

Pours thick and dark with a light tan head. Everything about this is chocolate. Impressively so. Consistency is rather milky. Alcohol is almost not present which is rather surprising to see that it is at 11 ABV. If you can get this, get it.

22oz bottle. Pours a thick, super dark brown, black color. Very small, crisp, light brown head, no lace. Smells like home made hot chocolate. Sweet cocoa. The taste is a bit malty and roasty up front and then sweet and chocolatey through the middle to the finish. There’s a bit of alcohol burn on the finish as well. Medium body for such a thick looking and tasting brew, nice mellow carbonation.

Pours black, one-finger tan brown head. Big bubbles fade to a small cap with some time. Nose is pungent chocolate, not so much of ’raw’ chocolate but more chocolate syrup, tootsie rolls, chocolate milk even, some slight roast. Taste goes three ways: first, bittersweet chocolate, not as artificial-tasting as in the aroma; second, really significant presence of spicy alcohol, a definite drawback; third, piney, spicy, resinous chinook hops in the background. Mouthfeel is a little slighter than I’d expect or prefer, light-to-moderate. Very long lasting and very nice chocolately bitter aftertaste.
