Southern Tier Choklat

Pours black with a thin tan head. Chocolate stunk up my whole room when I opened it, girlfriend could smell it 10 foot away. Flavor is dominated by chocolates. Cocoa powder, dark chocolate, chocolate syrup, all of it. You can taste a bit of malt and alcohol as well. Chocolate stays huge in the finish. Alcohol is noticed but it’s nice to have something distract from the flavor. Very interesting and one dimensional. A full bomber of this was a chore, but a delicious one.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a very small light head. Aroma of chocolate. Taste of lots of chocolate (particularly tootsie roll chocolate), some roast in the aftertaste. If you like chocolate, you will love this beer. Even better, eat some chocolate with this beer and you will really be in heaven. This is good stuff.

If the Jah-va Stout is fair about its contents this one advertises in capital letters the size of the Hollywood sign. Be prepared for one of the most chocolately beers you’ll run across when you crack this. I found this pleasurably though it might wear on the palate if you had to finish off more than a single bomber in short order. Hopefully this one will reappear in the future.

Aroma / Appearance - The cohesive lacing clung to the sides of my snifter as the minimal head immediately receded into a deep black fluid base. The nose is strong dark bakers chocolate blended with coffee grounds, anise and plums. In some ways it reminds me of a mug of genuine hot chocolate (not the powdered form you get at the grocery store or a coffee shop). Malty bittersweetness forms a solid foundation. This is not the most complex imperial stout but it gets its point across.

Flavor / Palate - The chewy mouthfeel is almost suffocating in its density. Packed inside is vanilla, hazel, whipped cream and fresh hot chocolate (again not the powdered form but the real thing). It doesn’t change much over time. Even the finish has a dry maltiness to it that reminds me of a chocolate milkshake. It’s one of the more distinct imperial stouts out there.

Bomber shared with Bobbi. Kick ass aroma of sweet milk chocolate. Almost like a cookies n cream milkshake. This is soothing on the senses...almost luring. INTENSE! Flavor is a BOMB of dark chocolate, leading to a moderately dry and bitter finish. A touch of burning alcohol, but it is pleasant. Almost like a rich chocolate milk with booze and some bittering. As I dive deeper into this brew, I am set back in a bit of awe, wondering how they managed to swing such a beer with very few flaws. Damn good!!!

Bomber from Rodman’s, D.C. Whoa, folks aren’t joking about the tootsie roll aroma. I mean, it’s very distinct: dead on, in fact. As a fan of the Blackwater Series from ST, I wasn’t sure if those boded well or ill. But once you get into the brew - with a thick, lustrous body like its siblings - the taste is anything but sweet and syrupy. In fact, the strong roasted malts (stout foremost, thanks very much) are complemented by a deep chocolate that’s more like good bitter dark, with a dry finish, than anything confectionary. Yet another winner from these folks.

Bottle. Pours pitch black with small creamy brown head. Chocolate aroma hits you right in the face as soon as you start to pour. Taste is chocolate, obviously. Milky dark and light chocolate. Milk duds. Tootsie rolls. Not very beerish...rather one dimensional, but who cares? This is one tasty drink.

Courtesy beerlando. Pours dark brown with red highlights. Creamy tan head, and real nice lacing. Aroma is pure chocolate. Brownies, cocoa powder. Flavor is, shockingly, filled with all kinds of chocolate notes. Roasted malts can barely be deciphered amongst the chocolatey goodness. Powdery and chalky mouthfeel, bitter finish. Balanced very well. Definitely the beer to go to for your chocolate fix.

Bottle: Courtesy of renhed, this looks almost identical to the Oat. Holy sh.., someone dumped Hershey’s syrup in my beer. I just kept repeating this to myself the entire time I was enjoying this. Not much else to be said other than this is the best chocolate-based beer that I’ve ever had. A bit one-dimensional, but ultimately it still tastes fantastic.
