leeburg (146), Juneau, Alaska, USA Feb 5, 2008 Updated: Feb 25, 2009Thank goodness I tried this, and the night before moving to the west coast, no less. This beer simply delivers as advertised. Imperial. Chocolate. Stout. jtw (942), farmington, Michigan, USA Feb 5, 2008 Wow, 22 oz bottle. Ive had stouts purported to be chocolate, but this smells more like cocoa than any ive ever had. Like the bit of milk left in the bowl after a cocoa puffs breakfast, and only a bit of other beer characteristics to be smelled after that. I thought that chocolate wasnt soluble in water, but Southern Tier seem to have found a way around that. Alcohol covered completely by sweetness and no signs of bitterness besides a bit of roasted barley. great dessert beer. yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA Feb 5, 2008 Southern Tier Choklat is a very black ale with a yellow hue and a khaki head that leaves decent lacing. It has a sweet chocolate aroma-- very candyish. It is full bodied and smooth. There is a little rumble before the end, but it finishes cleanly. It is swwet and smooth with a huge chocolate flavor. Caramel is detected. It’s well bittered and well balanced. It dries up for the finish. Pour this on ice cream! decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Feb 5, 2008 Thanks kp for the chance to try this beer at the Foothills gathering. A dark brown red pour. Aroma of chocolat is huge. Flavor is just smooth rich chocolate with a hint of nice bitter and pleasant abv. Solid full mouthfeel and good carbonation. Very easy drinker just a hint of oddness at the end of this beer kept it from being perfect. This beer is just pure chocolate and nice. Best of show. RblWthACoz (963), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 5, 2008 On-tap.Pours like midnight with no stars and comes with a tan head. Nose is fully a dark chocolate bar. Flavor is chocolate layered on chocolate. Just mounds of ever piece of dark chocolate you could imagine. Feel is smooth with a full carbonation. As beautiful as it was on the bottle. By far the most firm chocolate stout around. Very nice................On bottle. Pours pitch black of course, and very thick, with a very small line of tan head. Nose is amazing. Pure chocolate. Like putting your nose to a bar of heavily dark Belgian chocolate. Amazing. Flavor is unsurpassed as far as chocolate stouts go. Definitely can notice the bittersweet aspect there. I wonder how many bars they used. And who sat there and unwrapped all of them? Only thing I will say against the flavor is that it could use a bit more balance. Feel is thick on the liquid and even though the carbonation is low, the combination of the two come together beautifully and it just dances on the tongue. Another amazing brew on the Imperial Series. I intend to go back and get several more. Pure art. MaltOMeal (642), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA Feb 5, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown into black in the glass with a thin tan head which dissipated. Smell is of chocolate and chocolate. Tootsie roll as some describe it is spot on. Taste is of chocolate and nothing else. One dimensional. Mouthfeel is medium and creamy with just a touch of alcohol. ChainGangGuy (2522), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Feb 5, 2008 Appearance: Pours an opaque black body with a tiny, tiny beige head that, regardless of being so tiny, was rather short-lived.
Smell: Incredibly chocolatey! Sweet-smelling aroma of luscious chocolate ganache with a hint of vanilla and roast.
Taste: Incredibly chocolatey! Initially, I was worried this beer might fail to deliver like some other chocolate stouts have in the past, but this is NOT the case. Milk chocolate, chocolate malt balls, dark chocolate, and cocoa stitched together with vanilla notes, some roastiness, and a touch of spicy alcohol.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Mild carbonation. Tremendously creamy mouthfeel.
Drinkability: A very lovely imperial stout pumped up with chocolatey goodness. 11% but still an ease to drink. bigbeersilove (10), lansing, Michigan, USA Feb 3, 2008 had this at brannigan brothers in downtown lansing. when it was opened, the room filled with the smell of chocolate. thick and rich, this was like drinking liquid chocolate. i really can’t say anything bad about this one. as it sat and warmed up, the richness improved, it was truly a wonderful stout.
