Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle from Uber Tavern Seattle. Dark brown black color with a mocha tan head. Very smooth velvety feel in your mouth. Big milky chocolate presence with caramel malt. Only a touch of hop bitterness. Slight alcohol warmth. Very tasty dessert like finish. Very good.

Bottle at OT. Short milk chocolate brown foam. Dark amber color. Big chocolate aroma with some dried fruits. The chocolate also dominates the taste with some residual sweetness. Big body but apropriate for a beer of 11 %.

Original review date 12/9/2008... 22 oz. into Duvel - first sampling of late 2008 edition... Double espresso dark. Clean as all hell. Buttery maple head with nice lacing - a little short up top. Carbonation visible with a tip of the glass... LOTS and lots of bittersweet chocolate with some sweet caramel alcohol burn. Milky and bittersweet with huge chocolate malt. Sweet but not overly so. Hops are very subdued...maybe slight grass and flora...but they provide a solid counterweight to balance sweetness. Lots of complexity...huge chocolate up front with a fair amount of slate. Ultra-roasted chocolate malt provides good backbone with slight sweet caramel malt burn. Hops serve well to temper sweetness and cut alcohol here as well. This works. Silky on the palate with enough slate to loosen it up. Finish is viscous and even. Sip, sip, sip...I think I worked through this over a couple of hours - warmth did not do a disservice by any means.

Bottle 66cl. @ Papsoes blindtasting. [ Bottle #24. ]
Clear dark red brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is heavy malty, chocolate, nesauick, dusty. Flavor is heavy sweet and light heavy bitter with a long duration, and a dusty feel. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft. [20090501]

Part of a So Tier sampling party. This was my favorite of the evening. In general I’m not overwhelmed by the quality of chocolate stouts (I prefer the coffee stouts), but this was excellent. Appropriately roasted with a desirable bittersweet chocolate bite, blended with notes of soy, caramel, and dutch process cocoa. Nicely done.

Bottle@19 glas, Stockholm. Apperance: Dark brownish with a very little head. Aroma: Dark chocolate (lots!), Caramel and a hint of roasted malts. Flavor: Chocolate, Dark caramel, Cocoa, Hint of ripe fruit. Palate: Very thick and demanding taste of chocolate that ends with a bitter taste of cocoa and hops. If you like chocolate, this is the beer for you. Decievingly drinkable for 11%.

Opaque black. Amazing smell of dark, dark chocolate, caramel and more chocolate. Tastes of liquid chocolate with just the perfect amount of bitter hop finish. Love the palate--silky and carbonated at the same time.
