Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Pours black with a small, bubbly beige head. Dark chocolate and cream liqueur are present in the aroma along with some fruity notes. Very fruity upfront with a lot of sweet prune, some blackberry, and just a hint of tart cherry. Pleasantly bitter mocha surfaces mid-palate, and hit hard in the finish. Palate is full, bitter, and fruity. Despite the initial creamy mouth feel, it leaves the impression that you’ve been drinking whiskey and eating dark bitter chocolate.

22 oz bomber from a grocery store up in Seattle whose name escapes me at the moment. Pours out a delicious looking dark brown with a one inch tan head. The aroma is totally chocolate, rich and inviting and the flavor is much the same but with a light fruit presence. Sweet but not insanely too sweet like Creme Brulee was for me. A solid beer, if a little lacking in complexity.

Bomber. Pours a dark brown/black with a tan head. Aromas of fresh sweet milk chocolate - unlike anything else I have tried. Flavor is more fruity and balanced, with dried cherries, raspberries, weak coffee, milk chocolate, and a somewhat alcoholic berry finish. Very nice...

Pure dark chocolate liqueur aroma. Hershey’s syrup meets Godiva with a nice hint of vanilla. Not super sweet as the aroma would imply, but oozes chocolate and cocoa. Very nice.

650mL bomber at our KW group tasting. Thanks to the bringer of this bottle. Pours a viscous brown, nice looking. Aroma is chocolatey, though not as intense as I was expecting. Spice and cinnamon as well. Flavour has some more of all that with some fruity aspects, cocoa powder, minor hops. Quite chalky, which I don’t mind, though it still dominates. Quite nice and not cloyingly sweet, though I really doubt it’s actually 11%. Maybe 9. It wouldn’t be the first time ST’s beers are nowhere near the claimed abv. Didn’t blow me away.

Modest head to start, but it dies to rim bubbles that leaves nearly no lace. Dark brown color where light is allowed to pass on the edge. This smells like a rich German chocolate cake. Lots of powdered cocoa. The flavor is sweet with dark, slightly burnt malt. The finish has a dose of bittering hops. Chewy body. Short lived aftertaste, surprisingly. Here’s a case of like, not love for me.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Theis/BrianK. Clear dark brown with a distinct reddish hue. Small off-white head. Distinct chocolate aroma - artificial? Medium body, hard roasted malt and again very distinct notes of chocolate and cocoa. Fairly malt bitter finish. 010509

Brewed in the USA...... Pours a very dark brown color with a thin creamy head. Aroma of intense chocolate with a possibility of vanilla. The taste has a sweet chocolate flavor like a milkshake. The mouthfeel is pretty interesting, you don’t taste the 11% but it was kind of prickly on the tongue at first then the sweet chocolate comes through and finishes with a dry bitterness. Don’t think i could drink more then one !!!!
