Name pretty much says it all with all sorts of different takes on chocolate coming through in the nose and the flavor, from tootsie roll to milk chocolate to baker’s chocolate. Pretty impressive taste for a beer that would at first glance seem to be one sided. Decent amount of bitterness keeps it from going over the sweetness edge, but still not a beer I would have more than once every so often because it is very sweet and desserty. Still a very fun treat though. Finishes with quite the alcohol kick. nickd717 (1415), Palo Alto, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 12, 2009 Bottle. Good, but not to the point where you’d smack your granny. Black in color with minimal head. Aroma is tootsie roll all the way. Flavor is more tootsie roll with a little roasted malt. Fairly simple, but good. The chocolate could be a little better quality, but overall I’m not complaining. Smooth and creamy on the palate. j12601 (1413), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 4, 2009 On tap at the Golden Rail. Pours a jet black with a thick tan head. Smells like a melting chocolate bar, with a hint of perhaps a deep cherry note. Body is medium, but remarkably creamy. Slight cutting note in it… almost acidic, but not quite. Sort reminiscent (again) of a the slight alkali that balances out a good dark chocolate. Finishes with a nice bitter cocoa flavor. I have a feeling this is one of those few beers that if I come across it in a blind tasting I’ll be able to pick out… it’s just remarkably unique. Possibly a little heavy/novel with the chocolate, but that’s what makes it so good and interesting. The fact that somehow 11% is hidden in here is remarkable, as this is quite easy drinking… or sipping as the case may be, as this is something to be slow with and appreciate. Also had this side by side with the Rogue Chocolate Stout, and this just blows it away. HonkeyBra (1404), Lemont, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 8, 2008 This is one of the most impressive chocolate stouts I’ve ever had. Basically, smelled and tasted like straight up dark chocolate. Nice body, and, lots of chocolate in the finish. SuzyGreenberg (1403), Seattle, Washington, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 4, 2008 22oz bottle from swoopjones. Yeah it’s got a lot of chocolate, but so what? It’s done well. Enticing chocolate banana bread aroma with just enough bitter malt as to not be overly sweet. Pours oily dark brown, nearly black with a creamy khaki head. A gentile swirl leaves all sorts of sticky yellow legs on the glass. Thick, rich oily on the tongue. Not too much carbonation, and that works quite well in this beer. Banana, vanilla, bitter chocolate malt, milk chocolate on the tongue. 11%? Wha? Hidden quite well. A top notch dessert beer for sure... Another winner from Southern Tier. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 22, 2007 Huge huge chocolate, chocolate hit my nose as soon as I opened the bottle,at first it was like sticking my nose in one of those old Hersheys Cocoa black containers, but then the alcohol caught up and it became more of a creme de cocoa, and eventually peppery hops made an appearance.by far the chocolateiest aroma I have ever experienced in a brew, taste is big an unembarrasingly chocolate, like Hersheys syrup with some vodka, and that very distinct hop bitterness in the finish, texture was smooth and creamy, each swallow was a fresh chocolate experience. This is what I always craved when trying a new Chocolate brew and always seemed to fall short. Its not complex, what you have here is chocolate, alcohol and hops. If you love these threee ingredients ,this might be as close to perfection as it comes. An absolute winner. This is what I love about the craft brew scene ,after over 1000 ratings,to still be able to discover a gem like this.
