Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle (650ml). Pours a very deep dark ruby, almost black, with a large fluffy light-brown head. Aroma is big-time chocolate, like smelling a rich hot chocolate. Flavour: Whoa, that’s very chocolatey along with some hops and alcohol along for the ride. Pretty boozy in the finish, could probably use some aging to tone that down. Medium to full bodied. Might have been the mood I was in at the time but this was too chocolatey for me, and even though I was sharing the bottle with my wife I still was unable to finish my half of the bottle. Still, for what it is it’s pretty good.

650 mL bottle received via trade with jah noth. Pours opaque with a small, rocky, dark brown head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, chocolate), light hops (herbs), average yeast (leather) with notes of prune, date, and toffee. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Long duration, heavy sweetness, light acidity, and moderate bitterness.

Pours a deep black with a smaller creamy/bubbly deep tan head that left some lacing. Aroma of...you got it, chocolate. Sort of like a malty chocolate shake. Also picking up some faint hints of coffee, alcohol, caramel and roasted malt. Also getting some vanilla notes, but it all comes back to chocolate and I liked it. Flavors of dark chocolate, yet with a moderate level of hop bitterness and even some hop flavor, interesting mix. Also a good amount of roasted malts, some alcohol and yes again a nice milky rich chocolate.

Bomber. Rerating after the first bottle I had wasn’t very good. This bottle is totally different with both bittersweet and semi sweet chocolate. Its really liquid chocolate. Quite tasty.

Bottle courtesy of patrick767 at the Fort Wayne Winter Gathering.Small tan head, no lacing, opaque, no carbonation observed, and a dark brown hue with a red tint.Nose was malty, heavily chocolate, sweet, some caramel, and a hint of vanilla. Flavor was sweet, a lot of chocolate, vanilla, caramel and finishes dry.Smooth, dry mouthfeel and medium in body.Quaffable, pretty much one dimensional, and would make for a nice dessert beer.

Bottle. Pour is not surprisingly pitch black with a tan to near brown colored head. Aroma is dark chocolate, roasted malts, flavored and sweetened coffee, and chocolate cake. Very rich aroma of chocolate and not the Hersheys type smell. Almost of chocolate truffles. Taste is also rich chocolate, more chocolate cake, dark roasted malts, and chocolate truffles. Body is creamy and smooth with dense carbonation. The alcohol is there but did not really interfere with this one. Only a light warmth from it to be honest. Finishes with slightly more bitter notes with dark chocolate, roasted malt, light coffee and that ever present chocolate cake. Very tasty and not as obnoxious as the Creme Brulee ended up being.

Black pour. Tan head. Aroma is nothing but a great dark bar of chocolate. Flavor follows suit with chocolate, sweetness and a hint of roasted malt. Silky and smooth. A winner. Can i get some more please?!

On tap its just as stellar! Bonus Bomber from Phhd, shared with my Girlfriend Cyn, I’ve been pretty excited about this beer since I first found out about it. And this is pretty much my last big beer from Southern Tier I haven’t had. Pours Black with a ring of light brown/tan. The nose is the most amazing chocolate nose I could pretty much imagine its intense. The taste is rich and extremely chocolately. I won’t say tis complex but this is really freaking good, its the most chocolately beer I’ve ever had and its an imperail stout to boot. Holy crap this is damn good.
