Commercial Description:
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Sampled on draft at D’s in Regent Square this beer poured thick and black with a small brown head. The aroma was incredibly strong sweet chocolate syrup. The flavor was a marvelous blend of chocolate syrup, toasty malts, a touch of molasses and a hint of port wine. The finish was long sweet dark chocolate. Beergasm!

Bomber bottle...sooo dark brown that appears black...dark brown sugar head...the aroma takes my breath away, pure dark chocolate, and very much like a malted milk ball (whopper)...heaven has entered my nostrils, if heaven does exists its in the form of this inhale...can barely get away from the aroma to take a sip....damn. its a liquid dark chocolate bar...some solid malt to back up this phenomenon...its like a chocolate milkshake with added chunks of chocolate, just delicious...and the palate is simply luscious, glass has taken on some nice lacing as well...I could bathe in this beer, or create a lake with chocolate fishes and candy eels...:)

had this at brannigan brothers in downtown lansing. when it was opened, the room filled with the smell of chocolate. thick and rich, this was like drinking liquid chocolate. i really can’t say anything bad about this one. as it sat and warmed up, the richness improved, it was truly a wonderful stout.

Style and Glass: Imperial Stout, Snifter ABV, Volume & Calories: 11% in 22 fl oz. estimated at 400 C Purchased at: Canal’s Burlington for $8.99 Aroma: So nice, cocoa, chocolate, milk chocolate, sourness, cream, caramel, alcohol. Visuals: beautiful packaging, as usual, utter darkness, like a night in the deep woods, black, opaque, nice tan head, strong lace. Taste: Well balanced, syrupy chocolate, tight bitter finish, warming, strong, delicious. Palate: High quality, smooth texture, warm, bitter finish. Overall: dessert in a bottle. I’d have it again in a heartbeat. Likely my favorite chocolate imperial stout. It turns it to 11. Nicely done once again by Southern Tier.

Wow. It pours pitch black, dark and very opaque. Only tiny little bubbles are visible near the sides of the glass. A tan foamy head is formed by these tiny bubbles. The head slowly recedes as I drink, leaving nice lace patterns on the glass. The aroma catches the nose as it is poured. It is strong and full of dark and milk chocolate. The flavor is a bitter sweet chocolate with complementary chocolate and caramel malts. The hops add there own bitter complexity and play off the dark chocolate wonderfully. The palate is medium to full bodied, slick on the tongue and a little bit oily. This is an outstanding and decadent imperial stout that has a well hidden 11% abv that can sneak up on you.

Pours black with a tan head. Normal imperial stout appearance. The aroma is just like a cardboard can of nestle chocolate milk mix. Can’t pull anything out of it other than that. Maybe if it was the dark chocolate version which to the best of my knowledge, does not exist. By now the head died from a quarter inch to a slim film on the brew. Taste... wow. Not as much of a beer as it is a dark chocolate powder and water mix. Is this really 11 percent abv? I’m getting zero alcohol out of this beer. Brilliant. Just Brilliant. This is insane. Hence the spelling of the name. I now regret only getting one bottle of this from out of state. If i had only known, I would have bought more to show my friends that are non-believers. I can’t believe what I have here. I wouldn’t say this is the best Imperial Stout ever, but there is another category for it, and this puts a new standard for them all. Of all of the Southern Tier brews, this is their masterpiece by far. The rating needs to be one more point above 99. This is just magic.

The best chocolate stout I’ve ever had. Pours black as night. Alcohol character was nearly all but hidden behind the rich chocolate flavors. A well-balanced sweetness pairs with a nice dark chocolate bitterness. A symphony of flavor!
