COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

UPDATED: MAY 11, 2013 Bottle (bomber) shared with Tmac220. Poured a deep, dark brown with a nice dark brown head. Aroma was sweet with some chocolate and malt. The flavor followed with a hint of coffee in there as well. Lots of chocolate in the flavor. This is a great stout. Get in my belly!!

February 6, 2015. Bottle at home, bottled march 17, 2013 (?). Received in a trade with Douberd, thanks Christos!
Black with a small dense tan head. Aroma is lots of chocolate, sweet milk and dark bitter. Some vanilla, dark fruits and molasses as well. Taste is medium bitter up front with an increasing caramel and milky sweetness, finish is sweet and bitter chocolate with some caramel and vanilla notes. Medium bodied, feels a bit thin midways, creamy finish.

Pours black with a beige head. Pleasant chocolate/cocoa aroma, not overpowering. Bittersweet chocolate taste with a little bite on the swallow. Overall, pretty good. Would have again.

Deep chocolate matches the color and aroma. Like a bittersweet chocolate bar and milk this beer is smooth and thick. Cocoa stays on the tongue for quite a while. Southern Tier hasn’t let me down yet.

This is the bomb. Clearly I’m not alone in rating this beer highly. Thick, heavy, pour and look sets you up for flavor that doesn’t disappoint. Flavor is pleasingly complex for the name stating chocolate. If the abv wasn’t so high, I could drink this all evening.

Black pour from 22oz bottle at home. No head at all. It smells like chocolate. It tastes like chocolate. I don’t know what else to write about it. Good beer. Just one dimensional and it accomplished what it was named.

Smells like chocolate syrup. Jet black, somewhat lasting beige head. Dryer than the aroma leads to believe, though still quite chocolatey. Full bodied, pretty smooth.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip on 08.25.14. A: Milk chocolate, dark fruit, blackberry pie, and chocolate pudding. A: Some fizz. Midnight black body with no red in the glass. T: Chocolate pudding and blackberry dominate. Cherry, vanilla, and some woodiness are more subtle. P: Creamy smooth. O: This tastes like a Hostess chocolate pudding pie with the crust included. It has a slight, slight bitterness on the back end for balance. It also has some alcohol heat, but it’s not bad. Overall, this is the best chocolate stout yet.

It smells like chocolate and booze, which is cool, but... It’s just too sweet. As it warms, its complexity becomes higher, but it’s still just too sweet. Chocolatey, but too sweet.

Quite simply the best chocolate beer I’ve ever tried! Rich chocolate flavor and smell.
