“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bomber. Pours a dense black with ample tan head. Aroma is the bittersweet smell of baking chocolate. Taste is more chocolate, some molasses, vanilla and toffee, but, let’s face it, chocolate is the key in this dessert brew. WOW, like Hershey’s syrup on steroids. Excellent Blackwater Series!

Excellent chocolate stout! Southern Tier Blackwater Series has done it again. This one lacks only in aroma. I could drink this one all day long.

Strong chocolate scents immediately noticeable, with a hint of the typical stout aromas. Dark brown, not entirely black but thick enough to stop all light. Strong tastes of chocolate when cold, I imagine some of the other stout flavors will come out as it warms up

For the sake of time, I’ll get right to it: this is the king of chocolate beers. It’s jet black with a brown head and smells and tastes like a hershey chocolate bar. It’s chocolate to the core. Got it?

Dark brown pour. Intense dark choclate notes with a full, thick body. The alcohol is not very present in the taste. Flavor here is not overpowering but it is very, very distinct.

Smells like brownies and tastes like brownie batter. Sweet. Good with ice cream. 22oz is a bit much

Aged about 6+ months. Pours at 60°. Dark brown with dark brown bubbly head. You smell the chocolate and vanilla. Very smooth, hints of chocolate and vanilla continue. Finishes nicely, touch of bitterness.

Bottle that has spent a few years on my cellar. Thick dark black pour with just a slight head. Massive chocolate nose. Decadent. Smooth malt profile builds up to a roasted malt and sweet chocolate taste with lingering bitter chocolate in the finish. Decadent desert beer.
