COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“a stout of great contention” We are not the harbingers of truth as some may suggest but it may indeed be argued that our brewing philosophy is tantamount to a dessert with a bellicose past. How, you may ask, would a brewery determine a likeness to hard-coated custard? Our response is simple; it’s all in the power of history, and of course, the extra finesse needed to top off a contentious treat with definition.

By comprehending the labyrinthine movement of time, one would not think it strange to trace the errant path of an ordinary object such as a cream dessert only to discover that it has been the cause of cultural disputes since the middle ages. The British founders of burnt cream and from Spain, crema catalana, both stand by their creative originality and we respect that, but it was the French Crème Brûlée, amid the strife of contention, that survived to represent our deliciously creamy brew. 9.6% abv • 25º plato • 195º L • 22 oz / 1/6 keg 2-row pale malt / dark caramel malt / vanilla bean / lactose sugar / kettle hops: columbus / aroma hops: horizon

Pours pitch black with tiny tan fizz. Smells strongly of vanilla. Taste is strongly of vanilla with a little roasted character. Full-bodied with a sticky texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Southern Tier Creme Brulee stout finishes with a lingering sweetness.

This is an amazing beer. It would seem only the devil himself could make a beer like this. I mean how does it taste and smell so much like actual creme brulee???? WTF?? The only fair complaint about this beer is how rich it is, which might also be ones only complaint about creme brulee, so they truly matched this beer to its namesake in all ways. Wow.

Oh I love Creme Brulee. The only thing that is near as good as the dessert is this fabulous beer.

Few beers that I’ve tried transport me. This is one of them. I would have thought it unlikely that I’d so enjoy this beer so much, given its ambitious name, but it’s well worth the high price per 22oz bottle. Generally, I’d consider this somthing of a dessert beer, but it’s more of an "experience beer." After trying this beer while on vacation on Cape Cod, I made a point of sharing it with beer enthusiast friends. It’s something everybody should try. Some might not like it, but amidst the flavor bonanza that is this beer, the vanilla is so over the top that it makes it very distinctive. The descriptive notes described in other ratings are all there. This is an orchestral suite of flavors. Unlike another evaluator, I do think this beer is something to write home about. My mom and dad like some really good beers, and they would like this one, at least to try.

Pours a deep black with medium khaki head. The aroma flows out of the glass like an invisible fog of toffee and vanilla. A high quality vanilla at that. The nose is a medley of roasted malts and toffee, there is a light tartness at the fore and the feel is nice and thick. The aft is an explosion of creme and sweetness, the vanilla grabs ahold of my senses and slaps me around a bit. A world class beer to be sure, be nice and share with a friend.

UPDATED: APR 4, 2011 Pours as a stout should - black with substantial creamy caramel top. The label info is wonderful and lists their recipe, which is very cool. Love the hard-coated-custard history. Smells outlandishly nice. Just. Like. Creme. Brulee. Don’t bother with this unless you like dark, sweet (but not overly so) toffee, vanilla, caramel flavors. Of all the extreme flavored beers, this one truly lives up to the description. Much like their Chocolate Stout does. It is reminiscent of the Bourbon cask beers, but without the ass-kicking and super taste of booze. This is just right. Like Baby Bear. For perfect mouthfeel, get a glass that you can force a heavier head and take in some with each sip. Creamy, Vanilla, Toffee, Coffee, Custard. Just a delight. A sweet, one at a time delight.

08/6/11. Pours black with thin tan head. Rich aroma, strong vanilla, you can smell this brews creaminess. Taste and mouthfeel are super creamy, vanilla custard with underlying caramel and chocolate. One of my favorites.

This is probably my favourite beer - especially when it is aged! Black, black, black beer that is smooth and lightly heavy. It smells and tastes like a creme brulee! Its crazy... Caramel, heavy vanilla, and thick creamy sweetness. There may even be some chocolate and roast in there.. wow..

Wow... I’d like to high-five the makers of this beer. It’s amazing how much this one actually smells and tastes like creme brulee. Poured with effectively no head, which is the only reason I didn’t give this a perfect score. At the store today, I overheard someone who bought this, liked it, and came back to the store and bought a half dozen to make beer floats. Now THAT is a great idea.
