Commercial Description:
Heavy Weizen explores the inner depths of creativity and craftsmanship, taking a style of ale that is delicate and quaffable and shaping it into something exuberant and sturdy. The foundation of Heavy Weizen begins with prodigious quantities of North American malted barley and wheat. Next, the finest European hops are added to complement this ale's unique disposition by giving spicy aromas. Its spirit is forged during fermentation where our Bavarian weizen yeast consumes sugars and creates divine flavors reminiscent of bananas and cloves. Then, by aging this ale, we allow the divergent characteristics to blend together, becoming one. To capture Heavy Weizen's spirit, this wheat ale remains unfiltered to leave some of the yeast in the bottle. Serving this ale with a wedge of lemon is recommended, but optional. 18 plato, 38 IBUs, 2-row pale malt, malted white wheat, hallertau magnum, saaz.

Tap: Pours a hazy straw color with a white head. Flavor is of wheat, orange, lemon, some clove, and it finishes with a banana flavor. This was a well balanced and very good hefeweizen with a lot of flavor.

Courtesy GodOfThunder. Pours a hazy golden straw color with a thin, fleeting, off-white head. Minimal spotty lacing marks the glass. The nose shows notes of banana, clove, and nutmeg over fresh cut, honey coated wheat grains. There’s a touch of peppery hops in there as well. Flavors are well balanced, sweetened dry grains and caramelized bananas, and spiced with a dash of pepper, nutmeg, and perhaps a hint of nuttiness. The mouthfeel is substantial and smooth, without being cloying at all. Nice brew.

Cloudy yellow with a nice head. A lot of nutmeg, clove and allspice type flavors. The taste is candy sweet with the wheat taking a back seat to the spices. There is a little alcohol kick. Nice beer.

A hazy yellow-gold beer with nice presence in the glass. Aromas balance the clove and ginger spices with a soft fruit. The power of this beer is apparent when you taste the flavors and how well they are punched-up by the alcohol. Mealy bananas and nicely bitter hops. This is a well-crafted beer with lots of character. Not too dry on the finish.

Sample from bomber, courtesy GodofThunder. Cloudy light wheat color. Big spicy cloves, coriander and banana aroma. Smooth wheat and spice taste, very big. Southern Tier makes some big beers and this is a great example of what they do well.
