FlssmrBrewAlum (1081), Lisle, Illinois, USA Sep 28, 2008 Updated: Sep 29, 200822 oz bottle from Laraway Liquors (New Lenox, IL) shared with a friend. An interesting brew, indeed. Pours a medium goldish hue, lighter than expected, with a decent white head that sustains. Aromas are hoppy, citrus and other fruits that are balanced with a delicate sweetness. Taste is similar, a bit muted, with a more noticeable alcohol presence. Dry finish where the hops are evident, but the pale malts kinda slip into oblivion. Loses itself on its way to its goal. Dissappointing. Drink4Satan (585), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Sep 26, 2008 Pours a hazy gold colour with a frothy white head that leaves a beautiful, evenly distributed coating of lace. The nose is sweet and fruity with minimal hop presence. The flavour is immediately zesty and medium-bitter with hints of tropical fruits. It does well to minimize the medicinal tastes that can come from these pale, hoppy brews. The balance is perfect and the drinkability is high. The palate is slightly slick, mildly boozy, and drying in the finish. The palate duration is long, leaving fruity hops and resin bitterness. This is a bold statement by Southern Tier in making a beer that is far from bold, yet still enjoyable. Aroma: fresh, nice, aromatic, pine, citrus. 10 out of 10.
Visuals: beautiful label, golden, brilliant, clear, persistent, white head, slowly dissipating lace. 5 out of 5.
Taste: well balanced, sweet malt, bitter hops, strong, well crafted. 10 out of 10.
Palate: high quality, high texture, strong finish, drying, delicious. 5 out of 5.
Overall: A beautifully executed imperial IPA. Everything it should be. I’ll have it again. It’s an exemplar. Of average value. Beautifully crafted, and I expected nothing less of Southern Tier. 20 out of 20 cbeers21 (563), Miami, Florida, USA Sep 21, 2008 Golden with limited head. Smootherd hops and sugary sweetness come off the nose with toasted & light warming booziness. Prominant hop pineyness is ffeatured with an earthy dust flavor. Well balanced with fruited malts mid to late palate and a drying finish. Simplicity and balance are tasty on this quenching brew. Hoptagon (132), Arlington, Virginia, USA Sep 6, 2008 22oz. Bomber. Pale golden in color with a thin white head. Nose is almost lemony citrus, probably amarillo and also has some traces of pine. Flavor is also citrusy with some crystal malt characteristics. Body is relatively light and creamy for a 10% beer, tastes like there may be some wheat in the mix. That being said the body is very well balanced and not at all thin or watery. Some fresh bread and earthy characters come through in the finish. Not as much pine and resin character as the Unearthly. Actually does taste like an "extra" pale ale and not really like a IIPA. Hops are noticeable and present throughout, but don’t slap you across the face. Alcohol is well masked. Well done. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Aug 31, 2008 Updated: Mar 5, 2009Bottle thanks to PilsnerPeter, thanks once again. Poured a clear golden color with a moderate white head that faded to a ring. Moderate hop resin, pine, some leafiness, and some faint citrus, including orange and tangerine. Soft, lightly sweet entry with a hint of caramel leads into a lightly resinous, spicy floral hop hit with some light pine and sweet sugar. Full on the palate with a moderate hop bite. Pretty good brew, but not quite as good as it’s brother Unearthly. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 27, 2008 22 oz. bottle - thanks to biegaman for the trade; pours light orange and crystal clear; white head fades quickly; sweet and bitter aromas; some candy, earthy tones and stale malts; drinks creamy and bitter; a little malty, sweet and fruity, but mostly bitter; overall this comes off a little abrasive to me
