| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 13/20 | Jun 4, 2008 An "Imperial Extra Pale Ale"... of "simple composition"? OK.
Pours a middling dark straw/light amber color with a nice finger-thick head of chunky white foam. Musty, earthy, thick smelling, with some sharp, grainy citric notes.
Taste does pull off the "simple composition" part. Bold bitter hop character with some gritty sharpness. Toast and biscuits make up the malt character, smooth and simple. Hops forward, but not in an overly dominant fashion. Great on the palate- no way to notice that this is a 10% brew. Decent stuff. MatSciGuy (630), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 1, 2008 [Bottle] Pours clear gold with a small white head. Tons of grapefruit and pine on the nose. Flavor is wonderful unbalanced hoppiness. The malt is there, but not enough to restrain the huge amount of hops. Medium mouthfeel. Great beer. Guerde (699), Welcome, Minnesota, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | May 30, 2008 (bottle at Heritage Liquors’ first tasting) Pours clear gold with a white head. Aroma smells god-awful with a lot of pine, and the scent of OFF! bugspray. Deetalicious. The flavor barely possessed any flavor, and it’s a reach to say that there was some caramel and light hops. This was a pretty forgettable and unpleasant beer, that I believe is wildly overrated. mreusch (724), Olathe, Kansas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 30, 2008 22oz. bomber, pours a clear golden with a one finger white head, small spots of lace. Aroma is citrus, pine and light floral, with equal amounts of caramel malts. Flavor is more of the same, with a slightly lingering hops bitterness, alcohol is well hidden. An easy drinking beer that works well on a warm day. alexanderj (2227), Chino Hills, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 29, 2008 Bottle; poured a lighter than expected color; a goldish color, with a small, but stubborn white head. Aroma of caramel chews, grapefruit, fruit and biscuits. Well balanced; caramel and citrus hops. Alcohol is well hidden. A touch of sweetness. Drinkable, but not the best tasting version of the style. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 26, 2008 Sampled at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits Wednesday evening beer tasting, and shared by BDR and Badgerben. From a 22-oz bomber pours a light bronze/golden brew with a thick off-white head that slowly dissipates to a a thin white and creamy head. NIce lacing with this beer. Aroma of light caramel and wheat biscuit malt, a touch of grassy hops, some grapefruit and some grain alcohol. Taste is slightly metallic from the high alcohol, lightly carbonated with flavors of biscuit grain malt, grapefruit, a touch of white pepper and some orange zest. Finish is semi-sweet, with a light caramel and alcohol warmth aftertaste. moelikebeer (219), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 25, 2008 Bottle. Clear, golden pour. Medium herbal hoppiness in flavor balanced nicely with sweet maltiness. Medium body. probstk (1027), Nepean, Ontario, Canada
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 21, 2008 650 ml bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Clear deep golden with a decent off-white froth.
Aroma: Peppery, leafy, resinous hops, some cereal, biscuit and light caramel, some grapefruit, somewhat floral, a bit of fruitiness, light tropical fruits.
Palate: Medium-full body, low carbonation, very syrupy.
Flav.: Some grapefruit, orange peel and resinous/peppery hops, grain and bread crust, a bit of wood and more than a touch of alcohol, caramel and fruit; fairly sweet, decent bitterness, a bit of alcohol burn; biscuit finish.
Doesn’t appeal to me somehow, but I’m having trouble nailing down the exact reason – maybe I expect richer malt flavours for the body and hops? Not refreshing.
