COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We rely on age-old tools in the brewery despite being surrounded by high technology. As a sort of compass, we use the six pointed brewer’s star to help navigate uncharted brews. The cardinal points of water, malt, grain, yeast, hops and a brewer make the baseline. From there anything goes. Sometimes the journey is as important as the destination.

You’ll notice a slight bitterness in Compass derived from our use of rose hips accentuated by high effervescence. Drink it cold from a fluted or tulip glass. And by all means, avoid sea serpents.

Perhaps a little hay, some floral and herbal notes, and citrus in the aroma, but none are particularly strong. It pours very well, with a fine white head upon a sparkling pale. There is light sweetness followed by medium bitterness in the taste, but not much more. A light body for a 9% ale, with a thin texture and fizzy carbonation, it drinks more like champagne than beer. While the flavor is a bit weak, the palate keeps it from being disappointing. May be well paired with seafood during a summer dinner with a sparkling wine drinker that is beginning craft beer exploration. Not sure it is properly classified as a Belgian Strong Ale. Aside from its high ABV, it seems more like a Golden/Blonde Ale to me.

Bottle that I took to Max’s for Jen’s going away tasting. Pours a hazed gold with a thin white head. Soft citrus, floral notes and a bit of musky yeast. Medium bodied, spicy musk, warm yeast. Soft musk into the finish, a bit of floral sweetness. Tasty enough.

Glowing banana-yellow color, cloudy/hazy like pineapple juice. A big, thick meringue of white head. Gorgeous. First whiff of citrus hop and Belgian Brett funk. The hops take on more of a pine-oil character. When agitated there is more horsey-must coming out of nowhere. A little bit of vegetable-sulfurs (expected). Pungent funk flavor; heavy yeast. The hops takes a backseat to the funk in the flavor: there are some grassy and agave notes. The label says rose hips, so I guess that’s there too (reminds me of a tea I had once with rosehips). Has an almost sour finish, with a touch of lemon. Fizzy feel, lots of carbonation: prickly. It’s a worthy addition to the So.Tier Imperial lineup. Light and summery.
