We rely on age-old tools in the brewery despite being surrounded by high technology. As a sort of compass, we use the six pointed brewer’s star to help navigate uncharted brews. The cardinal points of water, malt, grain, yeast, hops and a brewer make the baseline. From there anything goes. Sometimes the journey is as important as the destination.

You’ll notice a slight bitterness in Compass derived from our use of rose hips accentuated by high effervescence. Drink it cold from a fluted or tulip glass. And by all means, avoid sea serpents.

Pours a hazy light golden with a white head that fades to a film. Great simple aroma- bright and citrusy. Grassy, dry, some crackery pilsner malt and some chalky white pepper phenolic notes. Definitely some Belgian yeast notes, but stays pretty clean. Lively effervescent body. Flavor is dry. Has apparent crackery pilsner base characteristics. Some grassy and resiny C-hop notes come through the chalky Belgian yeast notes (although they are subtle). Simple, dry, highly drinkable. Has a long hoppy vegetal finish with some soft bitterness. Sessionable and doesn’t feel like 9% ABV.

I mean, ok for doing something new. But a 9% pale? Why? Hop heads won't order it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice slightly fizzy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet fruity, winegum crocodiles, hops, flowers, dried fruits, minerals, butterscotch, cardboard, citrus. Taste is slightly grassy and fruity, hops, newly cut lawn, cardboard, bark, citrus peel, wet leafs. Longlasting bitterness, dry mouthfeel. Fair enough.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled 5/03/2013. Pours lightly cloudy golden straw color with a 2-3 finger dense and fluffy white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings around the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge bright lemon zest, orange zest, tangerine, pineapple, pear, pepper, herbal, floral, grass, light pine, bread, light honey, clove, and floral earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of bright hop notes with the rose hips and a light-moderate malt presence; with big strength. Taste of big lemon zest, orange zest, tangerine, pineapple, floral, grass, pepper, pine, bread, clove, light honey, and herbal earthiness. Good amount of spicy/earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, floral, pine, grass, pepper, clove, bread, light honey, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance and complexity of bright citrus hops and rose hip additions; with a light-moderate malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, lightly prickly, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic spiced hoppy golden ale! All around awesome balance and complexity of bright hops with the rose hip additions, with light malt balance; and extremely smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle pours a dark yellow with white head seems to have floaties. Does have nice crisp carb good bubbles well after pour. Taste smell. Dough/bread yeast. Lemon tart. What I assume is rose hip floral. Slight caramel. Mostly a bitter bit. Strange but as the glass empties I like it more

Draft sample. Pours a clear yellow color with a large fluffy white head. The aroma has some doughy yeast, floral and herbal hops, a splash of white pepper, some sweetness and citrus notes. The flavor has more doughy malts, toasted bread, floral and herbal character, light/medium body, mild bitterness to the finish with some citrus. This was a bit of a disappointment, especially if it replaces Oat or a couple of the other stouts.

Aroma is lemon and cleanness. Lasting head, but chunkss of something in the beer, i’m okay with this, beer snob probably not. Palate is nice perfect balance. The rose hip actually comes out in flavor, pretty amazing. Sweet tartness nice balance with carbonation? Carbonation? Yes that is a central cause of flavor in this brew. Very nice!
