We rely on age-old tools in the brewery despite being surrounded by high technology. As a sort of compass, we use the six pointed brewer’s star to help navigate uncharted brews. The cardinal points of water, malt, grain, yeast, hops and a brewer make the baseline. From there anything goes. Sometimes the journey is as important as the destination.

You’ll notice a slight bitterness in Compass derived from our use of rose hips accentuated by high effervescence. Drink it cold from a fluted or tulip glass. And by all means, avoid sea serpents.

Pencil shaving, lemon zest, grass aroma. Hazy amber, medium head. Malt and lemongrass, lightly sweet, lagery. Medium body, warm, spritzy. Drinks like a moderately hoppy bock, not a lot of Belgian character.

Poured into a perfect pint. 4.0 A: Clear medium yellow color. A bit of yeasties floating around. Two fingers of frothy white head. Retention is very good and plenty of lacing is left. 4.0 S: Citrusy hops - orange, grapefruit, and lemon. Moderate herbalness that I assume is the rose hips. Neutral maltiness and clean. Not super complex, but it smells great. Nothing to complain about. 3.75 T: Pleasant neutral maltiness sticks out more so than in the nose. Orange, grapefruit, and lemon citrusiness. Moderate, well integrated herbalness. Again this is a winner. 4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation with a pleasant creaminess. 4.25 D: Supremely and infinitely drinkable. No complaints. This is a winner. ★ 726 characters DavoleBomb, Sep 06, 2013

I poured it from the bottle into a Stella Artois glass. It pours orange with a big white head and nice lacing. The aroma is orange, hops, and yeast. The is big on orange with some biscuit, salty cracker, spice, and booze notes. There is a nice bubbly crispness to it, which surprises considering the alcohol content.

Golden orange pour from bottle at home. White head. Fruity and dank aroma. Rosey, floral, fruity, berries and a little hoppy. Pretty tasty

The aroma is very great; rose water and grassy hops with some sweet malts and alcohol. Taste is rose water and sharp piney hops, grounded with a solid pale malt base. Some oaky tanins in the aftertaste and alcohol warming in the chest.

Draft. Poured a clear golden yellow with a small foamy white head. Aromas of heavy floral and light citrus. Flavor followed the nose and I tasted mainly floral and the rose was easily identified. Medium to full body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation, and a bitter finish. Not bad.

Shared from brown bomber bottles into Duvel goblets, thanks Scott! It poured a mostly-clear amber with sudsy, long-lasting beige foam and lace. Very nice appearance, great use of bottle conditioning. Solid malty characteristics: nutty, biscuity, bready, caramelly. Equally solid hoppy balance: fruity, earthy, a little peppery and woodsy. Subtle floral and cranberry tannin contribution from the rose hips. Not really any noticeable yeast esters and phenols, which makes me think Ratebeer should consider reclassifying it from Belgian Strong Ale to American Strong Ale. Ironically, we also shared a homebrewed Australian Sparkling Ale (all Australian grain, hops, yeast), which this Southern Tier Compass resembled more so than anything else I can think of. Medium body, spritzy carbonation, faint mineral water essence, lingering bittersweet aftertastes. No trace of the elevated alcohol in the aromas or flavours, but I definitely felt the boozy effects after awhile. Very tasty, I’ll look to buy more of this.

On tap at Hopjacks. Pours a cloudy orange with medium frothy off white head that lasts. The aroma is belgian yeast and grain. Medium mouth, fruity malt, strong yeast, light booze, decent.
