3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared with HopTsing. Reminds me of velvet- even looks smooth. Aroma puts me in mind of a cordial, chocolate cherry, sitting next to some pla-doh. Taste is a little more bitter than I expected, but still retains a liqueur like sweetness as well, and is cut with an astringency.

22oz Bomber poured straight down the middle of my oversized snifter. A pinky sized dark tan head that doesn’t stick around. The beer is pitch black. The remaining head is a nice ring around the glass. The nose has notes of chocolate and oats, maybe a non-descript dark fruit. The beer is 35degrees out of the refrigerator so hopefully the aroma will improve. Initial thoughts, the mouthfeel on this beer is tremendous. It is thick and creamy. It has a super velvety quality as it rolls through your mouth. Super thick, wow! Big chocolate, almost a bitter chocolate, but its nice. There is a lot going on here. The chocolate is first but then there’s a sweet/bitter taste from the toffee and caramel flavors, maybe a licorice. The hops make themselves known on the finish. It is a very nice balance though between the sweetness and the bitterness and the mouthfeel. Leaves a nice stickiness on the lips. Overall an excellent beer!!

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 13/20
22 oz bottle into a snifter.
A: Pours a black color. Very little head is formed, sadly, though not unexpected given the serving glass. The thin, mocha-colored foam fades away very quickly.
Giving it a VERY aggressive pour, the head forms about a finger high, but still with fairly middling retention. However, it leaves a very nice ring of lacing on the glass.
S: A decent amount of chocolate and vanilla make themselves known immediately. Oats are also evident. It’s a touch boozy, not surprising given its gravity. I wish the aroma was bigger/bolder, but it’s pretty decent either way.
T: At first, I notice the slightest touch of chocolate. This is quickly supplanted by subtle vanilla, caramel, toffee, and oats; it finishes with some boozy dark fruits, licorice, earthy tones, and a touch of roasted malt. Licorice becomes a bit too dominant as it warms up. The sweet finish helps conceal the boozy qualities somewhat. On the other hand, the flavors, while well balanced, aren’t very intense. Bigger notes of chocolate or vanilla (AND LESS LICORICE) would make this good stout great.
M: This is really luscious, thick, chewy, creamy, viscous, oily, and luscious in the mouth. Did I mention luscious? It’s almost like liquid velvet in a manner. Low carbonation and high residual sugar means this will sit lazily on the palate...ah well, anything to make me want to swish this around more is a great thing. The monstrous feel does a very good job of concealing the alcohol.
O: I admit, I didn’t have terribly high hopes for this one, seeing as I feel most big oatmeal stouts have way too much booziness to them. Then again, if there’s one thing Southern Tier knows how to make, it’s a ridiculously decadent dessert beer. And ridiculously decadent it is - finishing a whole bottle solo can be a chore. However, the fact that I simply can finish this solo is a testament to its solidity. This would have been incredible if the flavor could match up to the mouthfeel, though.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz Bottle. The pour was a pitch jet black with an average (1-2 finger) cocoa brown fizzy head that diminished quickly, down to a wispy residue and small collar with fair runny lacing.
The aroma was of a roasted biscuit malt, light resin hops and a leathery doughy yeast with notes of milk chocolate, oats, roasted coffee, molasses, vanilla and a light dark fruit presence (raisons & plums).
The taste was lightly sweet and very roasty with a good malt backbone and had hints of oats, chocolate and a mild fruity presence at first, and then became smooth and creamy with a bold coffee presence, a mild oat lactose flavor and a light boozy feel towards the finish. The flavor lasted a nice long time following the swallow, with a roasty alcohol warming sensation left to linger on for a while longer.
Mouthfeel was just past halfway between medium and full in body with a mildly dry texture and a carbonation that had an intensity that was just past medium.
Overall this was a very good and roasty brew with a bold mocha coffee taste along with a creamy oat flavor that when blended together it created a beer with a nice smooth drinkability, which did a superb job of concealing the exceptionally high ABV. In one word YUM… www.facebook.com/KAJIIsBeerReviews

Big, thick, and chewy. Alcohol is well hidden, and surprisingly drinkable since it’s not sweet.
