Commercial Description:
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Bottle. Deep dark brown color. Grapes, lots of mango and grapefruit in the aroma. Oily hopbitter flavor with citrus, mango and melon. The flavors disagree with the color. Maybe there is just the slightest hint of roast in the aftertaste. But that could be make believe. I like this beer.

Pours black with dark mahogany edges and a thin, wispy-lacing off-white head. Aroma of fresh resiny grapefruity hops and sweet roasty dark malts with a hint of dark chocolate. Starts with good fullness and caramely malty sweetness well balanced with good citrusy flavor hoppy bitterness. Finishes slightly warming and bittersweet. A nice dark hoppy strong ale.

Pours a two finger dark cream head that fades slowly to a thin layer leaving a good lace. Deep, clear amber/mahogany color. Grapefruit hop nose. Light-medium carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Flavor is malts and grapefruit hops that are really well balanced. Nice imperial black. $6.49 for a 22oz bottle from Manchester Wine and Liquors Manchester, CT.

Very nice big drinking, perhaps without a definable characteristic to seperate itself from others in the style. Still very good and would go again.

Pours a deep caramel brown, approaching black under a short, tannish head which settles quick to soap suds. Big citrus hop aroma, fruity and sweet, tangerine, Juicy Fruit and Lemondrops. Mild herbal/grassy notes follow, but the citrics are hard to drown out. There is an untamed sugary sweetness to start the flavor, which further shows a bittersweet fruitiness (more citric sweetness along with pulp and rind), bitter, rye-like malts, a latent roastiness and a drop of soy sauce. Low syrup on the tongue, finishing dry. It’s never a good sign when you use the word "interesting" to describe something, but I’ll use it here. Good attempt, but I wasn’t sold on the flavor which was far too disparate from nose to mouth. ~~~~~~~~~~ 22 oz. bomber from Kenwood Liquors, Oak Lawn, IL

Bottle from Dilly Deli. Poured clear black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate toasted malt and earthy aroma. Medium to full smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toastedvbiitersweet flavor to medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met with a good complex beer.

Bottle. Pitch black pour, minimal carbonation and a great chocolate and espresso aroma. Flavor was also strong bitter chocolate, smoky peat and a little vanilla and strong (but balanced) booze on the finish. Pretty good!

bottle courtesy of bmartin08, thanks yet again! pours black with an off brown creamy 1 finger head that leaves good sheeting and lacing. smell is of hops and lots of nice malts, not too sweet, plenty of bitter, dry malts. tastes almost like an iipa and an imperial porter mixed together. lots of hoppy goodness, but a tons of nice sweet malts, but more noteably the dark roasty malt notes in the body. has a very creamy mouthfeel, and leaves a both bitter and sweet aftertaste. this is a pretty complex and yet well balanced beer.
