Commercial Description:
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Dark red colro, tan head. Hoppy alcohol scent. Hoppy, malty, sweet taste. Smooth mouthfeel, high bitterness. Alcohol aftertaste. Hoppy, smooth and very drinkable, I like!

Interesting but I was left unimpressed by this beer. It is not as hoppy as an ipa but doesnt have the malty goodness that comes with darker ales. Enjoyable though.

Serving: 22 oz. bottle. Appearance: Pitch black with a slightest of ruby highlights running through it. It also has a foamy, tan head that fades relatively quickly, leaving small bits of foam on the top. Aroma: A big pine hop nose dominates on this one. Chocolate notes struggle to peek through. Flavor: Citrus and slight pine hop notes are in the lead. Clearly an IPA. Roasted malt, salt, and some fruitiness add to the landscape (or is it tonguescape?). The combination of the hops and the roasted malt lingers for ages. A little too long in fact. Palate: Medium-low, soft carbonation with a medium-rich mouthfeel and a long, bitter and roasty finish. Overall: An enjoyable take on an IPA, but I don’t think I want more than one pint of this one.

Small sample from a bomber at a tasting at Bishops Arms, Göteborg, Sweden. Dark reddish brown, medium beige head. Intense piney, citric, and perfumy hops aroma, on a thick caramelly malt base. Medium bodied and smooth. Fairly dry, yet cloying, high bitterness. Not impressed.

(bottle from bhensonb, thanks!) Pours black with a tan head and minimal lacing. Strong aroma of grapefruit peel, pine, orange zest, smoke, raisin, brown sugar, and roasted malt. Each of these smells vary in intensity, with one sniff producing an all hop scent, another smoke, and yet another produces the raisin and brown sugar. Really good complexity here. Flavors of chocolate covered orange zest, grapefruit, raisin, roasted malt, and coffee, that finishes out with a nice and even bitterness mixed with some cocoa. There’s also some juicy hop that lurks underneath the more prominent roast and dark fruit in the mid, which creates an interesting and very good combo. Mouthfeel is medium, and the alcohol is nowhere to be found. Didn’t really have high expectations for this one, but wow, this is really good stuff. Thanks again Bill!

Deep mahogany in color with a beige head. Grapefruit, pine, caramel malts in this poweful aroma. Full body with light carbonation. Citrus and pine hops, light roast, some dark malt flavors. An alcohol feel in the finish. Nice.

Bottle @ HJ Hansen, Odense. Pours dark brown with a small creamy white head and lacings. Lovely nose and taste. Mixed roasted caramel and fresh piney hops. Full bodied. Smooth. Very nice.
