COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

double deuce bottle - pours black with a finger of tan head and thin lacing. Nose is brown sugar, dark fruit and licorice. Flavor adds floral notes, caramel and "cough drop". Moderately sweet and not very bitter at all. Dry finish with lingering bitterness. For a black IPA, it’s not very IPA-like, but would agree more with the self-labelled IIBA. Can’t detect the 9% ABV at all, well, at least on the palate.medium to full body. Vinous aftertaste. not what I expected, but better.

Pours a very dark brown color, almost black, with a very small beige head. Aroma is pretty complex, lots of malts and hops mixed. I’m getting toffee, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, prunes, molasses, cherries and pine. Taste is moderately sweet and somewhat syrupy like some barleywines. It’s more malty than hoppy. Very soft and smooth. Sticky mouthfeel. Finish is long with a chocolate and roasty aftertaste with a touch of fruitiness. Great beer. I would call this a barleywine instead of an IPA since the hops aren’t that strong. Or maybe the bottle is a bit old and the hops have faded.

A nice soft imperial black ale. Lovely colour to this beer, though I would have like a more hop presence to come through to give a bit of interest to the palate. The more I sit and ponder this beer the higher the rating is getting.

22 oz. bottle from Bert’s Better Beers. Perfect presentation, pitch black with a ring of white head with excellent retention. Aroma of chocolate malt, pine hops and a mild sugar. Taste is much the same. A very smooth and mild black ale. Decent.

Thanks Air Force Hops. Enjoyed in a red wine glass. Dark amber brown. Very earthy smell. Hints of fig. Sort of chewy. Lots of pine cone. Some cherries and brown sugar. the booze is well hidden. Low IBU and pretty drinkable. 9% and still sessionable. Hints of citrus.

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2013 Pours ruby-tinted copper. Smells and tastes of vegetation, wet hay, roast, charcoal and hops. Pretty "meh", through and through.
