COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Pours from a 22 oz bottle very dark brown with a thin, filmy off white head. Aroma is a strong citrus and alcohol mixture, light pine notes later along with a mix of caramel and black malts. Flavor begins with a citrus and pine hops bite, moves into a melding with the black malt and finishes with a light raisin and light nutty flavor with a sharp alcohol ending. Beer feels pretty thin with very fine carbonation. Overall the hops was very noticeable but the thinner feeling of the beer seems to offset the overall balance of the beer making it a one time beer in my mind.

22oz. Pour is cola brown with a small ring of off white head. Aromas of piney hops, grapefruit, and a hint of caramel. Flavor is full of roasted malts, coco, piney hops, and finishing sweet. Interesting brew and very drinkable.

Bottle. Opaque, murky dark brown. Short tan head. Aroma is strong citrusy hops, hop resins, soft nuttiness, and dark roasted malt. Taste is strong citrus fruit, resinous hops, pine, light malt notes, soft toffee and cocoa. Body is bitter, oily and medium-full. Carbonation is moderate and rather bubbly on the tongue. Lots of citrusy hops during the finish along with light herbal/mint notes, roasted malt, cocoa, and pine. Basically Un*Earthly with dark malts.

Bomber courtesy of swolf. Sweet nose and some roasty malts. Black body with tan head. Flavor has a deep roasted nut and roasted grain to it. Also some chocolate notes. Only thing that resembles an ipa is the dry bitters of the alcohol and that is left on the palate. Intriging brew glad I was able to try it.

this brew pours a deep reddish-brown color with a medium light tan head that dissipates steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus and hops plus some toffee. Medium body with flavors of resiny hops, sweet toffee and malt, along with some light chocolate. The finish is roasty and hoppy with a lingering bitter aftertaste. Complex and enjoyable overall.

(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) Dark black color with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is lightly hoppy with some mild citrus and licorice notes. Flavor begins with some dark malts and a nice hop balance, dark fruits, licorice, and smoke. Smooth and well balanced with the alcohol well hidden.

Had a chance to try a pint of this at RFD in Washington D.C. Pours a translucent, slightly watery, black with purple edges and a creamy, thin white head. The menu had this labeled as an "Imperial Black Ale". Uh, ok. . . . Aroma was hoppy, but only mild citrus fruits, a bit smokey, with some roasted malts and cracker. Flavor was nice but sort of all over the place: roasted malts, slight coffee, dark fruits, figs, oranges, light lemon. Finish was medium bodied and sweet. I liked it but I couldn’t really tell you why.

very dark brown with some purply hues- initial smell is that of roast and some smokey bacon- was not that excited at first- then some sweet hop aroma came through- balance in this beer is certainly towards the roast in my opinion- not nearly as hoppy as I was expecting and hoping for- don’t get me wrong, the hops are there, and citric, but not really feeling the black ipa label- more like a stronger american stout.

TAP: very dark red/brown pour with frothy light brown head. Huge roasty nose with some dark fruit. Heavy creamy mouthfeel, roasty smooth, hardly any hop kick until late. Good stuff!

Draft - Poured an almost black with a big tan head that produced some very nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is pretty much all citrus/grapefruit and pine hops. Flavor is also very hoppy (yum) with some roasted malts to provide some balance to the hop bitterness. Excellent beer...
