Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

6/2/10; 7pm. 22 ounce bottle drank in a Duvel glass. 9% ABV; Best at 42 degrees. Pours black-- almost no lucidy when held to light. Offwhite 1/3 inch head developed on pour, but dissipates in a minute or two to just a small remaining head. Looks like a porter, but the aroma that stands out, is the hops, although the smell is very minimal. Taste is very much like a porter, although slightly more bitter. Malt aftertaste that is neither overwhelming or particularly noteworthy. Overall this is decent, but I couldn’t call it an IPA. It’s really just a slightly hoppier version of a regular porter.

Bottle received as gift and then promptly spilled about half of it (ugh!). This is a really good black IPA. It pours a very dark, dark brown-black. Aroma of nuts, roasted grain, some hops. Flavor is a great mix of coffee, chocolate, roasted grains, and hops and all combined in a very smooth-drinking beer. Will have to try another of these to make up for losing so much of it to the floor...

UPDATED: APR 12, 2015 Bottle from Epsom Circle Market. Aroma is mostly hops and yeast with mild maltiness. Appearance is beautiful, clear, dark dark reddish brown, with 1 finger height beige head, with nice persistent lacing. Taste is more bitter than sweet but is a good balance of both--hoppiness initially and more malty in the long finish. Palate is thick medium-full bodied creamy feel with just about perfect carbonation--maybe a bit to the high side initially, but mellows with time. Overall, nice complexity from the nose to the taste with nice appearance and palate.
