Tap. Tulip snifter. Black. Nice head and lacing. Clean fruit and malt aroma. Very crisp. Great mouthfeel. Malty and dark fruit to start, then nice finish. Excellent beer from an excellent brewery.

Tap at Bulldog NE. Wow. Just wow. Visually embodies what a black IPA should look like. The taste is hop-filled without being bitter. Sweet without overpowering sweetness. A great finish with a hint of roasted malt. A vibrant, fresh taste that leaves you wanting more. Seek this one out!

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Appearance - dark dark brown. Small head.
Aroma - nice hoppy. Citrus.
Mouthfeel - low carb. Silky. Strong finish.
Taste - solid citrus hops. Slight malt aftertaste. Balanced hop to malt flavor in favor of hops but not as in your face as stone brewery.
Overall - easily the second best black IPA I have had. Not as good as wooky jack because I like the rye but excellent.

Bomber. Pours a cloudy dark black color, a small grey and beige head. A sweet nutty and fruity hop nose. The flavor is big dark fruit, large dank hops and chocolates, huge burnt toffee. Very sweet, some prunes. Pushing toward a Porter. Light smoke. Good. Huge decadent sweetness.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma of some caramel and chestnut, mostly ale-like sweet aromas. Taste is a bit roasted with malts and a hidden bitterness. All in all, the description fits: this is less an IPA, more like a dark ale and quite a good one but I question the purpose of making an IPA this non-bitter.

From a 650ml bottle on 19/10/2013. Pours a very dark amber with a small head. The aroma is fairly subtle with some dark malt and fruity hops presenting. In the mouth, the experience starts out sweet, with lots of caramel, brown sugar, and sweet citrus fruit, but the hops (which prominent and linger just a little) do hit you at the back, providing the requisite balance. the texture is quite creamy and the carbonation medium. This is one of the easiest drinking 9% beers you’ll ever try, and is relatively mild for something labelled as an imperial. Still, it’s very nice stuff.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Keg in Craft Brixton. Opaque very dark brown, almost white with an off white medium foam head. As I’m coming to expect with Southern Tier, the nose is rich, sweet, black sugar, treacle, maple syrup, pine. The taste is a stout with roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, but also a sugary maple syrup, caramel and treacle sweetness to it. Not as cloying as some ST beers and its nicely balanced on the palate.

I’m not a big-time black ale fan, but got to try this one out of a bomber thanks to a beer buddy. Very dark brown color. Aroma of roasted grain. Taste is slight alcohol, dark malt, subdued but obvious pine resin hops and a constant sweetness. The sweetness is subdued to a degree so it’s not cloying. Not bad. Not sure I’d buy it for myself, but it’s high quality without a doubt.
