Commercial Description:
Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it’s brewing.

Bottle [650ml]. Pours a very dark brown with deep ruby hues and an average size mostly-lasting frothy tan head. OK lacing. Aroma of pine and citrus hops, sweet lightly roasted malt along with dark fruit and a hint of peat. Flavour follows the aroma with hops (piney and citrusy again) and lightly roasted malt, somewhat sweet, along with dark fruit, some alcohol and chocolate. Average bodied. It’s good but I’m personally not crazy about these Black IPAs.

Bottle: Dark amber pour with a thin beige head. Rich and aromatic with caramel, candied sugar, and faded citrus hops. Sets the tone for a lightly aged barleywine, although it does have this light scent of red licorice... Wet mouthful is hoppy and fruity, yet retains a dark floral sensation. By dark, I not sure what the hell I mean, but not in the traditional floral hoppiness. More of a wet floral taste, I guess. Still, this blend of candied sugar and red licorice permeats the taste. Interesting...

Bottle from theisti. Pours deep dark black with a large puffy off-white head that fades quickly. Nose is bready malt and spicy, earthy hops with just a touch of roastiness. Flavor is initially dark matly, chocolate, with a surpriingly anise/licorice flavor that wasn’t really in the nose (and to be honest - was a little strange). Finish is a well-balanced bitterness and earthy hops again. Slight alcohol heat when cold. overall - this one was good, but strange. Not sure I’d seek out more of it, but it was pretty tasty.

Bought this bomber in Northville, MI. It poured a dark brown, with off white head. The aroma was strong, and sweet, with some raisin and caramel. The flavor followed with lots of caramaly goodness, and some slight grassy hops. Weird, but great beer. Cheers!
