IPA stands for India Pale Ale and ours is an American version of the classic style. IPA’s namesake lies in its colonial roots. British soldiers on their way to India dark a lot of beer, but found it would go stale on the long voyages. Meanwhile, brewers knew that by adding more hops, the beer would stay fresh. Voila! A new style was born and it is one we are proud to brew. Southern Tier IPA is a triple-hopped on its journey to your glass for a fully aromatic experience.

A surprising winner. Initially very similar to Harpoon IPA however this has a nice touch added onto the finish. It has some lastingness as well on the finish.

12 oz. bottle from Shoreline. Drank on 7/27/06. Clear, copper in color. Small 1 cm. off-white / yellowish head. Drops quickly. Some foam hangs around, good lacing. Aroma - big, sweet and fruity aroma. Some sweet malt, but mostly big, fruity hops. Flavor - High bitterness up front. Fairly well balanced on the tongue with some underlying malty sweetness, and a big malt backbone. Some different, hard to describe hop flavors after the swallow and in the finish - a little citrus, lots of fruitiness, almost some candy-like sweetness. Palate - Solid medium, big malt backbone. Good amt. of carb. Overall - A good beer, but pretty sweet and fruity. Don’t know if I could drink more than one at a time. Enjoyable, but just a little off of the hop flavors that make up my favorite IPA’s. I like the solid malt backbone.

Bot. Good orange citrus sweet aroma. Pretty, clea amber beer with tight offwhite head. Unsweetened bitter grapefruit flavor. Palate has a tinge of the metallic, good puckery bitter finish.

UPDATED: AUG 14, 2006 Pours copper with a small white head that dissipated quickly. Aroma is strong caramel maltiness, medium hop aroma. Hops are mostly citrus, small amount of pine. Flavor is domoinated by caramel maltiness with some buttery esthers. finish is decently long and dominated by pine and citrus hops.

This IPA is very, very good--and I can’t wait to get my hands on more. The pour is a light golden color with an off-white head. The smell is terrific--plenty of citrus and pine hops. You can tell from the first whiff that this is going to be en enjoyable brew. The taste is a great balance of hops and malt. The level of bitterness is almost perfect--and is kept in check by the great caramel malt backbone.

UPDATED: JUL 30, 2006 On tap at Olde Dublin Inn, Clifton Park NY. Good IPA colouring but a shade more amber than copper. A good representation of IPA, but with an over-bitter finish. Proud to call it a NY State beer.

Bottle: Copper color, with a medium white head. Aroma of citrus and some spicy hops. Flavor caramel, with a citrusy bitterness coming through a moment later. A little resinous. Some mild lingering bitterness.

Bottle via my secret santa Summer 2006. The beer pours to a clean copper orange body with a thick fluffy head that is fully lasting with a gorgeous lacing. The aroma is caramelly grapefruit with a little vanilla. The flavor is more malty than hoppy and bitter. Sprucey... very sprucey. Buttery caramel. The palate is very clean. Perhaps too much so. I would expect some lingering bitterness or oilyness but there is none. The flavor leaves quickly. I was kind of let down with this one.

This beer pours a maroon color with orange highlights that has a clear body and leaves a thick tan head that leaves this beer quickly. The aroma is very faint, some caramel sweetness, and a weak presence of hops aroma. The taste more than makes up for the smell the taste is fantastic, starts bitter with a blast of grapefruit quickly followed by a smooth balancing of caramel and a nice crisp tartness to round out the flavors. The finish is soft and sweet but leaves you with a memorable bitterness bite.

This is one tasty IPA! Big floral hop-nose, beautiful reddish haze color and nice malt balance makes this beer a truely enjoyable one. Leaves a nice aftertaste as well. Drink it, don’t read this.
