IPA stands for India Pale Ale and ours is an American version of the classic style. IPA’s namesake lies in its colonial roots. British soldiers on their way to India dark a lot of beer, but found it would go stale on the long voyages. Meanwhile, brewers knew that by adding more hops, the beer would stay fresh. Voila! A new style was born and it is one we are proud to brew. Southern Tier IPA is a triple-hopped on its journey to your glass for a fully aromatic experience.

Overall a good IPA. A bit too much malt and less hops aroma and flavor for my taste. More bitter hops and less exotic citrus hops. I definitely prefer the Headstock IPA by Nickelbrook. This one has an bit higher alcohol finish and less the hops or malt flavor.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2015 The aroma of this beer is citrus pine and honey. Taste kind of follows on this one. A solid IPA.

On draft at Sharp Edge Brasserie. Poured hazy orange with minimal head. Light floral nose. Sweet malt, grass, light citrus notes. Rather weak hop profile. Average IPA.

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2014 330ml bottle served in a tulip glass. A: Pours a dark orange color forming a medium thin bubbled white head with medium retention forming lots of thin and lingering lacings in the glass S: Great nose. Very flowery, mainly piny and a bit citrus hops profile. Strong notes of caramel and crystal malts. Well hidden 7.3% ABV T: Slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of caramel, roasted malts, crystal and caramel malts. Biscuity. Good hoppy bitterness and a persistent and lingering dry end M: Medium body. Medium carbonation. Smooth texture: Southern Tier water quality has to be mentioned. Toffee and piny aftertaste O: Great drinkability. As good as their Live APA that I’ve tasted just before this one... Tap at yard house on nitro. Copper with thick creamy white head and good lacing. Smells piney. Bitter and slightly floral. Finishes with strong bite. Full bodied. Well done from a great brewery, but certainly not their best.

Medium gold with a thin white lacy lasting head. Fresh zesty and fruity with soft grass and caramel. Sweet taste of malt with lots of hops to the touch and lasting citrus bitterness. A bit thin initially than has a nice hoppy hit on the end.

"this is pretty much a classic example of an american ipa. BIG hop aroma (if you told me it was a double, I wouldn’t have argued). Nice hop profile. Big and juicy. Decent body. Flavor is very good, lots of pine and citrus with some malt balance. well done."

Drinking at home in a thin tulip glass. For some reason this smells like a lager to me. I know it’s a strange comment. I haven’t had any lagers in this glass in case you were thinking transference. Looks good, built a good sized head which stuck for 5 minutes. Fallen down now. Crisp taste with a lighter body than some Ipas. Hops provide a background but don’t come out as the main flavour. Alcoholy taste in the middle and a pale malty after taste. Could probably drink this as a session. Drinking without evaluation reveals some citrussy pineapple flavours that don’t stick around very long. It is light on the tongue and doesn’t leave a heavy taste. Drier than many Ipas and leaves a bitterness. I would drink this again if the mood struck me, but not for a long while. Closer to an Apa.
