IPA stands for India Pale Ale and ours is an American version of the classic style. IPA’s namesake lies in its colonial roots. British soldiers on their way to India dark a lot of beer, but found it would go stale on the long voyages. Meanwhile, brewers knew that by adding more hops, the beer would stay fresh. Voila! A new style was born and it is one we are proud to brew. Southern Tier IPA is a triple-hopped on its journey to your glass for a fully aromatic experience.

Dark golden pour from a 12 oz. bottle. Nice citrus hop notes with a malty flavor. Good IPA!

Tasting from Oct’ 2013.
A fine example of a cross continent, new age IPA that wonderfully showcases the hops used. It produces a deep amber and just shy of bright. Fine and tight carbonation lifts up a solid, rocky white crown that daubs a thick lace. Earthy, floral and spicy whole hop nose encompassed by notes of grapefruit, pale stone-fruit, pine-needles, nettles and damp, sharp herbs. Clear cut, bright and bold hops dominate the palate. Body is medium with a soft feel, oily back-end and dry finish. Well rounded, earthy, floral and zesty with ample fruit and toasted malts to lift it. Generous bitterness is retained long after swallowing. Quite spicy and tangy, drawing saliva in to quench the palate. Sessionable but with a lot going on to keep the mind ticking over in quiet contemplation. Nanna’s whole rose garden seems to be floating right there in the liquor. Very nice stuff and one I’ll definitely track down again. (12fl.Oz, no date stamp [assured a fresh batch], Cellarbrations Carlisle)

Appearance: pretty clear darker gold with amber hues in it as well, pours with a medium off white head Aroma: malty sweetness, caramel, butter, alcohol perhaps, Taste: a caramel malt sweetness, moderately bitter throughout, bitter finish Palate: lively carbonation, bitter aftertaste, medium body Overall: kind of a let down, I'm glad to have southern tier in louisiana but a lot of the stuff in stores in old, this bottle was tasted 4 months after bottling 2 days after I bought it, lacks complexity or any eye popping characteristics ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

33cl bottle. Pours dark orange with a moderate white head. Nothing much to say about it, unfortunately it was more than 1 year old and there wasn’t to much aroma or flavor just some malt and grain notes. I have to try it again for a more accurate review.

Hmm, this is cool beer. I also noted that my bottle is stamped the same 04/07/2014 date as a bottle reviewed below, and though I agree almost wholeheartedly with his/her assessment, our review differs a little bit. The nose was a little understated (no huge hop bomb) but there was still a lot going on. Caramel and bread from the malt, with tropical fruit, grapefruit and some pine. I didn’t find the beer actually lacked aroma, but the malt and hops are both fighting for your attention, which I quite liked. I’d call this beer a junior DIPA. Taste follows the aroma: a fairly sweet, boozy malt balanced nicely with some piney, bitter hop resin. The finish isn’t assertively bitter, but a nice lip-smacking bitterness lingers along with a good amount of alcohol warmth.

Transfer from BA review on 9-22-12- Served in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a clear medium amber colored beer with a one finger white head. The head faded over a moderate amount of time to leave a nice level of lacing. Smell – The smell was heaviest of a citrus and pine hop aroma. Mixed with the hoppy smells were notes of light (pear and peach) and tropical fruits. Taste – The taste begins a bit on the sweeter side, with some of the citrus that was detected in the nose being upfront in the taste. As the flavor advances the pine hop taste makes it arrival known and begins bitter the overall taste of the beer. As it furthers the taste is met with flavors of an herbal nature, which in the end leave a more crisp flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the average side for both creaminess as well as carbonation. Fairly good for the style; both drinkable as well as good for bringing out the hoppier flavors. Overall – Overall a good IPA. Not too strong and too light and quite easy to drink.

12oz bottle. Not bad. Definitely a malty ipa with a mild hop finish. A good gateway pa!
