IPA stands for India Pale Ale and ours is an American version of the classic style. IPAís namesake lies in its colonial roots. British soldiers on their way to India dark a lot of beer, but found it would go stale on the long voyages. Meanwhile, brewers knew that by adding more hops, the beer would stay fresh. Voila! A new style was born and it is one we are proud to brew. Southern Tier IPA is a triple-hopped on its journey to your glass for a fully aromatic experience.

Bottle, clear ambery pour. Hoppy, citric rindy aroma, with some malt character - but the hops are the nose. More citric piney hop flavors predominantly, with caramel crystal malt backbone. The hop flavors themselves struck me as a little harsh, and notes of alcohol came through as well. Decent IPA.

Slightly hazy amber color with an off-white head that dissipates before you notice there was one. Aroma, hmm... First a thought itís all about the hops but then realized itís not about hops at all. Well, naturally hops are on the front but not in the west coast style. Thereís also some caramel and cookie-type of maltiness in the aroma and what strikes me most, tea. Buttery malts, some easy-going fruity hops and again, tea dominate the flavor. This is probably not a fresh bottle but I could have used a stronger malt backbone and more aggressive hops. I wasnít too impressed with this IPA

12 oz bottle: Very hazy, coppery amber w/ a lasting cream colored thin head. Aromas start w/ a cedary wood and lemony citrus hop as well as a bit soapy when chilled. Toaste malt and very little caramel @ first, but it becomes stronger as it warms. Very light fruitiness. Balance is to just bitter from start to finish. Malt profile is of toasty and caramel flavors up front and in the middle, but the finish is bitter and citrusy hop flavored. Aftertaste is a good balance of hops and toasty malt. Again, very little fruitiness. Medium body/w lower med. carb. and a dry m/f. An average IPA that doesnít really stand out in a crowd.

UPDATED: JUL 30, 2006 On tap at Olde Dublin Inn, Clifton Park NY. Good IPA colouring but a shade more amber than copper. A good representation of IPA, but with an over-bitter finish. Proud to call it a NY State beer.

Bot. Good orange citrus sweet aroma. Pretty, clea amber beer with tight offwhite head. Unsweetened bitter grapefruit flavor. Palate has a tinge of the metallic, good puckery bitter finish.

looks refreshingly good in the glass. moderately darkish and clear amber with a short foamy head. there certainly is a lot going on tastewise. all of the usual things that make an ipa nice and tasty. but for me nothing really stands out, except that there is a low malt profile. the word i keep thinking with this is moderate as in moderately...and then a bit better. and that is how i will speak to this rating. a nice safe ipa which is -moderately- refreshing. with a nice moderate carbonation and a pleasant m-----te bitterness. oh, and just a touch of quality allfruit sweetness.
