3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hard to decide just how I feel about this one. Really roasty with strong coffee flavor. Very chewy mouthfeel. Sticky sweet chocolate and cherry as well. Nice dry balance with coffee and hop bitterness. Iím finding some nice hops in here, taking the coffee, chocolate and fruit flavors full circle into a bitter-sweet boquet. Wonderfully complex and completely drinkable. Powerfully rich. On the other hand, some raisin and licorice, with an oily character that I donít love. Strange marraige of creaminess and stickiness. Really nice roasted coffee finish. I guess I really like it, but donít love it.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
bottle-DLD06 thanks to ELjefe for the sample! Very close to black in appearance with a small tan, fizzy head. nose is woodsy, with quite a bit of piney hops, vanilla, milk chocolate and light coffee beans (less than what I was expecting). Flavors show the coffee infusion morso than the aroma suggests-char, roast, dark chocolate and fudge. nice palate-slick and lush. Big java finish with lingering husky quality, which is a good thing here

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: SEP 1, 2008 I have become quite fond of this brewer and had been looking forward to trying this one. Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured thick, black and oily with a medium sized dark brown head. You can smell this beer across the table as the aroma is amazingly strong coffee and sweet chocolate and moderate floral hops trailing. The mouthfeel is thick and smooth. The flavor is strong bitter coffee with light sweet chocolate and strong floral hops. The hops are a bit unbalancing. The coffee really lingers of the aftertaste. This beer hides the 12% alcohol amazingly well. Incredible!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured nearly black with some reddish highlights as the someone else mentioned. Smelled like hints of chocolate, coffee, espresso, vanilla bean and currant. Not strong enough in terms of the aroma. Coffee becomes stronger as it sits. Very smooth in terms of the taste with a unique coffee taste with a salty finish. Body was weak so I canít score the mouthfeel high. Drinkability was terrific for the strength. Overall I was impressed but to me it was lacking in complexities.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle DL Day: Nearly opaque with reddish highlights topped by a small creamy head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of mildly roasted coffee, vanilla bean, bittersweet chocolate, biscuity malt, earthy yeast esters, hint of smoke and grassy hops as well.
The taste is smoky and chocolaty followed by mild grainy flavors and hop bitterness. The finish is straight coffee imbued joy. The feel is a bit of a letdown even though it is oily and lush, seems a tad too chalky and almost cloy.
A solid brew and enjoyable but I am not sure it rates a near 4 overall average. Thanks El Jefe for the chance to taste this.

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2008 Bottle... DLDí06... This beer rocks!... Pitch black ale with a small, fizzy, well-tanned head. Roasty aroma with big time coffee beans and chocolate. The flavor is a swirl of espresso and milk chocolate with a rumor of caramel. Full-bodied and super oily with light carbonation. Finishes chocolatey and bittersweet. Intense, world class beer! Thanks to ElJefe for sharing the bottle!

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours a deep black body with a medium-sized rocky mocha head. Very rich chocolate and coffee aroma with fresh green hops. Wow, this is a monstrous body - loads of alcohol in a sticky mollasses body. Very rich and full flavours of chocolate, sugar, and toffee wafers. Bitter coffee bomb in the finish. Pretty good but itís mostly overwhelming!

Dark Lord Day, courtesy of El Jefe. Bottle. Dry, dark chocolate/coffee aroma. Nice creamy, light brown head. Dark, dark brown body. Excellent, rich flavor with some bitterness thatís restrained by the alcohol and creaminess. Excellent. A little weird in the finish but no complaints.

Single blind tasting side by side with Alesmith Speedway Stout. Sweet, malty aroma with mild hints of coffee in the nose. A slight amount of vinousness with later sweet chocolate aromas. Opaque black, inky body with a yellow-brown head and nice legs. Beautiful head. Sweet, sugary chocolate flavors to start, turning a little more vinous and acidic. Nice chewy body with roasty sweet malts late with coffee coming in to finish. Small amount of bitter hops are also present. Not as boozy as the Speedway and much more drinkable. This is pleasant, complex, and warming.
