boFNjackson (1233), Portland, Oregon, USA May 10, 2009 Bottle... Poured black with a light, light, brown head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee beans. Light, thin palate with a soft carbonation. Initial coffee and chocolate notes with a kick of alcohol and a little bit of hops for bitterness. Strong roasted grains. Super sweet finish. A little cloying but still good. BillWyce (90), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 10, 2009 Poured black with pretty much no head at all. Noted a coffee aroma with a touch of malty sweetness underneath. somewhat oily palate. Nice coffee flavor with a slight astringency to it. Hint of roasted malt sweetness at the back. Very nice, unless you’re turned off by the coffee, in which case, it’s doubtful you’d pick this up anyway. Spastastic (9), , Pennsylvania, USA does not count May 10, 2009 PJClarke (610), London, Greater London, England May 10, 2009 On tap:
Black with chocolate brown at the edges. Little or no head.
Slightly soapy chocolate aromas, metallic and fuddy.
Way too strong. Overly metallic and rich. Coffee to the fore with burnt chocolate finish. Quite unpleasant too muchness.
Over the top biting dryness and sour bitterness. Unsmooth and unrefind. A victim of the ’bigger is better’ mentality I believe. carruthm (1112), Seattle, Washington, USA May 9, 2009 black with a thin tan head. aroma of bourbon, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and perhaps a touch of cherry cordial. hot alcohol palate and bitter taste. trevor211 (500), Seattle, Washington, USA May 2, 2009 Snifter at Bottleworks - congrats to the guys for the successful installation of a few taps at what has got to be one of the country’s best bottle shops! Poured black, with a good-sized tan head. Tons of oak in the aroma - this one’s got a lot of wood in it. The coffee component is mild, but certainly present - one of my favorite things about the brew is the definite presence of roasty coffee without that note drowning out everything else I like about an impy stout - notes of dark chocolate and molasses. Slightly tart with the coffee and all the oak, and nice and thick, but well carbonated. Only slightly boozy, considering the 12%! Avengedpoet (325), Mesa, Arizona, USA May 2, 2009 Thanks to rustychiles for the share. Pours deep black with minimal wisps of a tan head. Aroma is deep chocolate, coffee, and roast malts. A taste to match. Sex in a glass. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA May 1, 2009 Bottle. Very dark brown with a thin tan head. Roasty, coffee aroma with some chocolate and a bit of caramel. Rich malt flavor with coffee and dark chocolate. Fuller silky body. Coffee and roast lingers with some chocolate and some hops. Alcohol nitceable, but in balance. Some complexity, but it doesn’t completely win me over.
