after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA May 21, 2008 22. Another tour de excess from Southern Tier. Holy wow. Black. Burnt tan swirls for a head. Big prune and soy sauce nose. Thumpingly gooey body...more like a bechamel sauce than a beer. Coffee sour, roast, chocolate, and malt sweetness for days comprise the mid-palate. This is great stuff, but really hard to face fully. 22 ounces of this, like the Choklat, is about 10 servings of this beer. Ando (105), Woodstock, Georgia, USA May 19, 2008 *did not like could not buy*
aroma: odd soapy floral smell. no coffee. i dont know what the heck this is supposed to be.. a joke? app: black brown. flavor: odd! bubble gum . strange. bordering on offensive. palate: fine OA: Odd. coffee?? where? stout? where? just a bad off beer. Why the hype? what gives?? Jan Primus (160), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada May 18, 2008 Pours deep black with barely any head. It tastes like a typically good imperial stout...there is coffee, dark chocolate and roastiness but I don’t really discern the added coffee. I had this a couple years back and felt it had a lot more coffee, I think they’ve toned down the Jah-va this winter. elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA May 16, 2008 bomber bottle $7.99. Pours a dark dark brown with a thin tan head. Smells of intense coffee, dark chocolate, and hops. Palate is medium, perhaps a tad thinner than, say, Brooklyn’s Black Chocolate. Flavor is a smooth mixture of rich black coffee, chocolate malts, alcohol and roasts. Very well blended and superbly balanced. Finishes with roasted notes , coffee and some bitterness. Really hid the alcohol quite well. Very good beer, if anything it finishes a tad thin for an impy stout, though this improves as the beer warms. Similar in quality and flavor to DdC’s Peche Mortel (but less coffee punch). 4.1 jrob21 (1251), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 16, 2008 Drank alongside a Moylan’s Ryans Impy stout and preferred the Moylan’s. This one was toned down on the roasted coffee and chocolate flavors (which I prefer in my impy stouts) and turned up on the port wine and sweet sherry flavors (which I like more in my barley wines). Something called a coffee stout should definitely be more coffeeish. Also after the Choklat I had recently was definitely expecting a big coffee presensce. No such luck on this one unfortunately. Don’t get me wrong, it’s in there, just not big and bold. crowderm (275), Recklinghausen, Germany May 16, 2008 Pours a nice dark brown, with a solid tan head. Aroma is sweet, chocolatey with a bit of coffee. Flavor is more of the same, good chocolate stout character, but not as much coffee as I was looking for. This is a really good stout, but not the great coffee beer I was hoping for. hillfiiiiire (283), Madison, Wisconsin, USA May 16, 2008 After drinking Choklat yesterday, I expected this to be like eating a coffee bean. I am here to report it is not, and I am a little disappointed by that. Smells sweet, but with no strong coffee! Tastes rather sweet. There is some coffee there, but it’s no stronger than a stout brewed with a malt combination to lend coffee to it. It’s still a good stout, but nothing as great as I had hoped. ketchepillar (475), Viña del Mar, Chile May 16, 2008 Not as java-y as I expected after having the Choklat yesterday. The coffee flavor is good though. It is kinda vinous and consequently has an alcoholic quality. Pretty smooth, low carbonation.
