gunsho (134), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Mar 2, 2008 this beer pours beautifully. a deep black murkiness reminiscent of a perfectly brewed espresso. it has a striking golden head that bubbles like the witche’s cauldron of macbeth. its lacing falters down the stretch but still has a great appearance. notes of coffee beans, liquorice, chocolate, malt, and a really surprising finish of lavender and hops. quite remarkable. shendrix (478), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Mar 2, 2008 This is a beer to fall in love with. It pours deep black, so dark that only the strongest light will shine through it. The head is a middling caramel, and the nose is coffee and chocolate. The palate--ah, the palate. Deep, rich coffee with semi-sweet chocalate and toffee sugar notes--but not really sweet mind you--with a lovely dry backstop. Wonderful. beerbill (1919), Laurel, New York, USA Mar 2, 2008 Updated: Mar 12, 200822 oz. bottle. First Batch. Pours black with some large carbonation bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass. No light passes through when held againist the sun. Moderate mocha brown head that disappears after a few sips. Wonderful aroma of fresh coffee, chocolate and lightly roasted malt. The flavor is equally enjoyable with again coffee, chocolate and lightly roasted malt well combined with no one flavor singly dominating. Coffee bitterness at the finish with a definite warming from the alcohol. Probably my favorite from ST thus far, although I think I may have to re-visit Choklat one of these days. jake65 (1658), Williston, North Dakota, USA Mar 1, 2008 Bottle: Massive espresso notes fill the room as soon as the cap pops off this rich brown pour. Massive brown head and spotty lacing. The nose continues intensity of espresso, mocha, and dark chocolate. Flavor is jah-va loaded for sure. Espresso, heavy roast, and bittersweet cocoa take over in the flavor. A coffee stout lover’s dream come true. Thanks beerbill! DenverLogan (421), MileHi, Colorado, USA Mar 1, 2008 Dark brown, lingering ambe head. Rich, flavorful, coffee, big baby booty mama gonna give you some tasty lava...yum! GMUcrew7 (353), Mason, Ohio, USA Feb 27, 2008 Pours very nice thick black with minimal dark tan head. As expected coffee and malts are the dominant aromas, with some chocolate and alcohol present. The flavor is excellent, a very well balanced combo of the coffee and malts with a nice finish of the hops. Vanilla is also mildly present in the flavor. The beer is nice and heavy, and although pretty high in alcohol the balanced flavor and nice body make it easy to drink. One of the best Imperial stouts I’ve had. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA Feb 26, 2008 Nearly black with a mahogany hue and a sticky brown head. Great aroma of coffee, leather, char and a bit of licorice. Upfront it is burnt in flavor but the follow through is actually rather light and fruity with cola, caramel and coffee. Very heavy but silky in body. Good balancing bitterness. Noticeable hop flavor that melds nicely. They have a winner here. golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA Feb 23, 2008 Bottle. Black pour, almost no head. Some roasted malt, coffee grounds, and a little burnt malt. Smooth mouthfeel, and the alcohol is hardly noticable. Flavor has a little sweet chocolate malt, roasted / lightly burnt malt, and coffee grounds in the finish. Nice amount of bitterness, and pretty well balanced.
