Aroma of roasted barley, dark chocolate, coffee, and a bit of alcohol. A fairly simplistic Imperial Stout with heavy emphasis on coffee and chocolate notes with nice hop bitterness at the end. Some vanilla and toffee notes are also present. I prefer the Choklat and Oat Imperials from Southern Tier to this one, but that is not to say that this isn’t a well done I.S. Nice full body to this one but slightly sticky. Driftwood6 (214), USA

I’m so far off of the standard deviation on this beer, I’m now wondering if I got a dirty glass or if my palate was already fried. Anyway-- I just thought it had a very rough, almost oxidized flavor. The coffee was a little bitter in flavor. But the aftertaste just turned me off-- almost skunky or soapy-- not sure. I just can’t believe all the other great reviews-- I might need to try this one again. All I kept thinking while drinking-- boy this is not even close to Founders Breakfast Stout. blipp (1638), Newark, New Jersey, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Mar 3, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malt with notes of coffee and a hint of hops. Full body, thick, almost creamy. Flavor starts with sweet chocolate, lingers on coffee beans and has a bitter finish of coffee and hops. Quite good. WickerBrew (312), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 3, 2008 Very good, although not quite as good as Choklat. Much drier and more roasted, with a very strong although not overwhelming coffee burst. Looks fantastic, darkness and good head, although I have to compliment myself on a perfect pour. And at a surprising 12% it remains dangorously drinkable. kennydiaz (185), staten island, New York, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 2, 2008 this beer pours beautifully. a deep black murkiness reminiscent of a perfectly brewed espresso. it has a striking golden head that bubbles like the witche’s cauldron of macbeth. its lacing falters down the stretch but still has a great appearance. notes of coffee beans, liquorice, chocolate, malt, and a really surprising finish of lavender and hops. quite remarkable. shendrix (478), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 2, 2008 This is a beer to fall in love with. It pours deep black, so dark that only the strongest light will shine through it. The head is a middling caramel, and the nose is coffee and chocolate. The palate--ah, the palate. Deep, rich coffee with semi-sweet chocalate and toffee sugar notes--but not really sweet mind you--with a lovely dry backstop. Wonderful. beerbill (1939), Laurel, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 2, 2008 Updated: Mar 12, 200822 oz. bottle. First Batch. Pours black with some large carbonation bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass. No light passes through when held againist the sun. Moderate mocha brown head that disappears after a few sips. Wonderful aroma of fresh coffee, chocolate and lightly roasted malt. The flavor is equally enjoyable with again coffee, chocolate and lightly roasted malt well combined with no one flavor singly dominating. Coffee bitterness at the finish with a definite warming from the alcohol. Probably my favorite from ST thus far, although I think I may have to re-visit Choklat one of these days.
