Nephilium (541), Ohio, USA Apr 22, 2007 Pours a thick motor-oil black, with a thick tan head. This beer is dark, even holding it up to the light, you see nothing through it. The first taste of the beer, is a sweet start, with a long coffee finish. No alcohol noticeable in the flavor at all. A very good coffee stout. JCB (1716), Durham, North Carolina, USA Apr 22, 2007 Updated: Sep 30, 2007Wow, this is an extraordinary beer. Received a 22oz in trade from HimerMan - thanks!!! A lustrous thick black body with minimal head/lacing. The aroma on this baby is just massive, a super-fresh coffee nose that also exudes chocolate malts. A true sipper, this one is very rich as you might expect but - and this is probably a manifestation of the particular coffee used (Jamaican Blue Mountain) - has a slight tartness and acidity as well. This doesn’t at all detract from the flavor, but gives this brew a distinctiveness when measured against the usual roasted-as-fuck coffee impys. Awesome stuff, which I hope to sample again soon. estoppel (1028), Buffalo, New York, USA Apr 20, 2007 Black body, small tan head, roasty nose. Chocolate and coffee in the body with lots of alcohol. stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 20, 2007 Bottle sampled. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of coffee, roast, and chocolate. The flavor is smooth for 12%, coffee, roasted chocolate malts, sweet, with a great body. MI2CA (1260), Noblesville, Indiana, USA Apr 19, 2007 Updated: Mar 30, 2009Giving this one a fresh go as I don’t feel my original rating was very good. Aroma is very strong chocolate, dark roasted malts, dark roasted coffee and alcohol. Flavor is more bland version of aroma. Chocolate and dark malts still there but the coffee is almost gone. Palate is creamy and dry. A lot better than my last rating indicated.
Original rating 6/4/5/4/15=3.4 Sample at Indy tasting Hotshotz - Aroma is stinky fresh dung and tons of coffee. The guy sitting next to me (Sprinkle) says it smells like "veggie ass". I did not let his opinion effect my rating. Pours black with a small brown head and decent lacing. Flavor is just fresh coffee, roasted coffee and dirt. I like a good coffee stout as much as the next guy, but there is no subtlety to this one. NJBeerman013 (768), Trenton, New Jersey, USA Apr 18, 2007 22oz. Bottle. Pours a midnight black in color with a frothy tan head. The aroma is of sweet chocolate and fresh coffee. The flavor is of the same mixed with a bit of hops and lots of alcohol. This beer really sweetens up as it warms also, the alcohol becomes much more evident. This brew definitely wams up a cool night. A great beer for the coffee geeks among us beer snobs. theisti (1640), Leawood, Kansas, USA Apr 17, 2007 Updated: Aug 25, 2008Bottle. Pour is all black with a medium sized tan-khaki head. Aroma is all coffee. Taste is initially pretty sour, than smooths out to the coffee and more traditional Imp Stout flavors. You can certainly taste the alcohol in this one, though it is masked. This was tasty, but not real complex. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 16, 2007 Pours a deep black color with brown highlights and a ring of light brown lace. Strong aroma of coffee with a sold chocolate malt and vanilla. Superb flavor of coffee with a thick and rich chocolate and roasted malt and vanilla, it finishes with bitterness, no alcohol was detected. The body is medium to full with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation. Simply amazing.
