3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Original review date 12/3/2008...
22 oz. into Duvel tulip...
Beautiful, ginger-colored, 2-finger head that’s very chewy and bready. Beautiful bonze/copper body with moderate carbonation and nice lacing. head has moderate staying power.
Awesome oily, floral hops...the dry-hopping yielded great results. Excellent grapefruit citrus tones backed by light-roasted malt backbone with good raw grain character. Light but full nose.
Straight-ahead citrus up front with lightly-stewed malt...a little light spice, too (ginger, cinnamon). Roast of various malts emerges with warmth. Not as forceful as on the nose but still extremely pleasant.
Definitely a citrus hop bomb with a creamy/oily malt backbone. A little biting but finish is full and bright...oily, oily, oily...
Methinks the excess citrus/rind bite precludes extreme drinkability but make no mistake...this is extremely well-done.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Copper body with sweet and hoppy aroma. Tastes like a pale ale. Hops definitly there with a mild body. Definitly a hybrid style but I’d call this a pale ale, if I didn’t know it used lager yeast. Too sweet. Grows on you, yet still an awkward concoction for me.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
When poured from the bottle, this beer shows its brownish orange color as well as its large off-white head, and the aroma blends caramel malts, floral hops, and a hint of llager yeast for an overall appealing scent. The taste is deceivingly sour on the front end, eventually giving way to a strong hop character with a hint of sweetness. The mouthfeel is interesting due to the full body and bitter finish, but the average carbonation and slick texture were expected.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours dark gold with a off white head. Taste bitter, citrus, crisp. I thought this was good. I would drink this again.

Tap pours a clear deep orange gold with two fingers of beige foam that leaves lots of lacing. The aroma is earthy hoppy more piney than figured. The flavor is rich golden grains with a bitter contrast. Very bold oily resinous hops, very light dried tropical fruits under it all. Ok for a hop forward beer of a malty style.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Tap at Bulldog Uptown. Served up in a sturdy pint glass. Dark golden color which is expected given the style. Faint aroma. Initial sip comes across more bitter than anticipated. Heavy handed on hops and reminiscent of the oily essence of hops. Expected some balanced sweet/spice but getting next to nothing. Hard to believe it’s such a high alcohol content. This one puts a small kramp in a very good brewery’s style.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap. At bulldog uptown. Clear dark gold. Aroma is not nearly as aggressive as the flavor. Bitter, oily hop taste, resin and pine. strong. Alcohol is well hidden. Lasting hop presence. Expected some other spices for some reason. Good, not great. A decent hoppy beer for the southern tier fan.
