grandet (477), Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 9, 2009 Bottle from jessup plaza. Poured a very dark brown/black with a ncie head. Very roasty aroma with some chocolate. Taste is the same with lots of roasted malt and chocolate. The alcohol is covered very well. Very good PhillyBeer2112 (2084), Orange Park, Florida, USA Mar 9, 2009 Very dark, produced a large enough head, luxuriously thick, with a very fine frothy quality, dark beige in color. Aroma was mostly roast and chocolate, there might be a hint of coffee but its a hint at most. Flavor is nicely full and sweet with chocolate and dark sweet malts. The mouthfeel is full and creamy with a fine carbonation, and that big oily texture that you get from all the oatmeal, and a little bit of the tannins too, but its counteracted by the superb carbonation in this. Finish is long with bittersweet chocolate and tannins, perhaps a mild spicy bitterness from the hops. Fermentation profile is very clean. The 11% is damn near unbelievable, this beer shows almost no hint of the alcohol and it drinks as easy and quickly (uh oh!) as any 5% oatmeal stout. Its a bottle full of WIN. dutch23mp (160), Mount Prospect, Illinois, USA Mar 7, 2009 I guess the best description for this is yummy. Strong hints of chocolate molasses, caramel, (perhaps some hint of vanilla) with a wonderful malty taste. The very high ABV is very well hidden and expect to take a nap after this is done. This may be the 1st ST product I have tried. the high ratings for this style (one of my favorites) is right on. foundmd (163), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Mar 7, 2009 22oz bottle. Been wanting to try this one for a while. Appearance is opaque black with a medium, creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts with sweet chocolate and toffee. The flavor starts sweet with warming alcohol, molasses, caramel, chocolate, and some light roast. Super creamy on the tongue and medium thickness. Finishes with some moderate carbonation and hop bitterness. Another great selection from Southern Tier’s Blackwater series. TGLBeer (10), Delaware, USA Mar 6, 2009 Not quite as dark as I thought, but a powerful beer none the less. Drinkable at 11%, and finishable in 20 minutes... Learn it , live it, love it... Drunk this beer gunhaver (1024), Tampa, Florida, USA Feb 26, 2009 Bottle, courtesy Bethany. Black pour, thick film of creamy tan head. Nose of sharp fruit and brown sugar, molasses, slight tinge of sweetness. Oaty flavors, dry sticky malts, chocolate, some roast and wheat, coffee. Smooth, drinkable, tasty and balanced. bigrond (1043), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 26, 2009 very, very nice. Bottle labeled Jan. 2008. Rich aroma, deep dark appearance. Thin head dissappears quickly. Flavor is heavy roasted amlt and delicous. Hard to believe it 11% ABV.
another winner from Southern Tier. thewolf (5662), Kolding, Denmark Feb 25, 2009 Bottle, bought @ Ølbutikken, Cph.
Pours utterly black with a fine, small, creamy, cappucino head. Medium duration. Aroma is sweet, lots of chocolate and the oats are rather apparent. Some stingy alcohol hits my nose with some prune-like fruitiness. Low carbonation, super creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet, lightly roasted. There is lots of goodness in here. Chocolate abound, liqourice peeps through, hops add bitterness and dryness. The alcohol might be just a tad too apparent, and warms nicely. The oats is apparent in the mouthfeel as well as a fine, lingering, sweet aftertaste of oats, chocolate and coffee. This is one of ST’s nicer offerings.
