COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“brewed for the harvest” This beer begins in spring when oat seeds are sown as soon as the soil can be worked. Meanwhile, select types of barley are planted with hopes that Mother Nature will be kind. Our brewers wait patiently until the legumes are mature and ready for the scythe. Upon delivery to the brewery, these ingredients are mixed together in the mash tun where they steep, creating a rich molasses-like liquid. Spicy hops are boiled with the thick brew, giving balance and complexity. Brewers yeast feasts upon the rich sugars, concluding its transformation into oatmeal stout. Pour Oat into a snifter, allow its thick tan head to slowly rise, releasing unbridled aromas. The color of Oat is as dark as a moonless night. The first sip reveals Oat’s thick and nourishing taste. Like a haversack to a horse, a bottle of this stout is a meal in itself. Enjoy responsibly. 11.0% abv • 238º L

08 bottle thanks to thebaldwizard. Clear dark brown almost black, small quickly diminishing light tan head. Lots of sweet Malts, chocolate, caramel, oats, and roasted malt. Decent, still too sweet as with most ST stouts, I enjoyed it though.

22 ounce bottle. Pours a thick very dark brown color with a dense 1 finger tan head with great retention that reduces to a lacing cap that lasts for the remainder of the glass. Some fairly nice glass lacing as well. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, oat, caramel, roasted malts and some light citrus notes and dark fruits. Also some very light alcohol aromas were detected. Some fairly strong aromas here. Taste of strong oats, chocolate, and roasted malts on the front with some espresso afterwards; with a fairly well noticeable bitterness on the finish that lingers for a brief period with chocolate and roasted flavors. No alcohol noticed in the taste, but there was a very slight warming after the finish, but otherwise very well hidden for the alcohol level. It has a full creamy body with medium carbonation. Overall this is definitely a great Oatmeal stout and is highly enjoyable!

Reviewed from notes. Pours nearly black with a light mocha head without too much retention. Nose brings forward some chocolate, light espresso, and roasted malt and oats. The taste is a bit harsh with some booze as well as a lot of roasted character. Feel is heavy and a bit boozy. As is often the case with this series, the beer shows promise but gets to be a bit much with more than a few ounces. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 10-26-2010

22 oz. bottle. This is a jet black beer. Looks like motor oil in a glass. I like bitter, and I like dry. This nails them both. Gave it a top mark for appearance, just because I have seen a rich, black beer pulled off like this before. Very bitter, coffee/liquorice finish. Good beer to finish off a night.

Bottle. Jet black with a tan head that leaves some spotty lacing. Light bitter coffee and chocolate in the aroma with subdued roast. Slight sweet, some licorice, tiny hint of roast, but not nearly enough. Bitter coffee end, but the sweetness isn’t doing it for me. Silky and viscous with soft carbonation. Solid, but nothing that overwhelms me.

Black colored brew. Aroma has oatmeal, licorice, maltyness. Flavor has a good amount of oat, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, chocolate, creamy goodness.

This poured jet black into my glass and left a nice thick foamy head that drizzled lace down the glass in trellising patterns as it moved down the glass with each Thursday night football sip. Smelled heavy of chocolate and malts with hints of hop and liquorice. took my first sip of this guy as the oily slick beer slid over my tongue i tasted smooth dark chocolate with esspresso bean and excellent dark roast malts. little pieces of dark fruit and liquorice came with extra sips. as it warmed caramel came out a bit more. this just tastes like a RIS with some oatmeal stout poured into it I think. the beer was a bit boozy, but still very tasty. would love it with a nice creamy cows milk cheese or with a dessert that isn’t overly sweet. creme brulee, or panna cotta. Well done Southern Tier, can’t wait to try the Creme Brulee i just picked up and hopefully Choklat when it gets released here soon.
