BeerHawk (1175), Huntsville, Alabama, USA Jan 27, 2009 Bottle shared by illinismitty @ the Barrios tasting. Poured black with a tan head. Awesome aromas of chocolate and a nice smoke undertone. The flavor has a good oat, chocolate, vanilla and roastiness to it with a slight hint of hops. Fully body, sweet, and smooth. Very nice! mjs (1445), Helsinki, Finland Jan 27, 2009 (Bottle -- shared with sayravai, thanks -- at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2009-01-27) Almost black. Small tan coloured head. Liquorice and roastedness in aroma. Full bodied and a bit oily palate with medium carbonation. Liquorice, bitterness, roastedness, creaminess, light sweetness and chocolate in taste. Roasty, creamy and bitter aftertaste. sayravai (3720), Helsinki, Finland Jan 27, 2009 (Bottled, 0.66l) Very dark brown with a small, beige head. Intensely malty, deliciously smooth, lightly licoricey aroma with balancing hop bitterness. Malty flavor with moderate licorice presence, and oat bringing smoothness and some milky sourness. The only fault is slightly too heavy burnedness in the finish. Alcohol is fully hidden. Very velvety-smooth, silky and soft-carbonated palate. An extremely enjoyable Imperial oatmeal stout. nqualls (1429), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jan 25, 2009 22 oz bottle courtesy of illinismitty at the Barrios Nashville tasting. Poured a dark brown/black color with a thin brown head. The aroma was oatmeal, milk chocolate and a bit of smoked meat. The flavors were oats, coffee, vanilla, oak and some warming alcohol. The palate was above average with soft carbonation, a full body and a creamy but not sticky mouthfeel. This was my favorite beer of the session. And that is saying a lot with all of the amazing beers brought out. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jan 25, 2009 Bottle that I brought to Barrio’s tasting. This was the first batch., and I believe I bought this at Fat Heads in Pittsburgh, PA. Pours black with a brown head. Aroma of smoke and roasted malts, with a hint of dark fruits. Full bodied but without being too thick- just a nice smooth slick mouth feel. Flavor of dark chocolate, oats, vanilla, and mild coffee with a nice balancing bitterness. Average amount of residual sweetness. Warming finish, but not hot with fusel. Excellent beer. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Jan 24, 2009 Bottle at Barrios’ Impromptu Tasting to pop Smitty’s Surly. Amazing. Near perfect smoke, chocolate, muted alcohol notes, peat, vanilla, oak. nose and flavors. Medium full body with nice creaminess. I am loving this sweet and abv warming finish. Delicious! PaulHegedus (458), Georgetown, Ontario, Canada Jan 24, 2009 Bottle at Volo, January 2009. This is beautiful in a snifter, dark black with a thick, cream coloured head, some lacing on the glass. There is plenty of fresh dark chocolate in the aroma, some cherry and alcohol. The mouthfeel is really tremendous: full bodied, slick and smooth; slightly oily. Very inviting. The flavour is very dry with subtle hints of dark chocolate, wonderful cherry and a hint of vanilla. The alcohol is very well masked. Fantastic! Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jan 20, 2009 THOUGHTS: Powerful and flavorful, but way easier to drink than their Creme Brulee. Hid alcohol fairly well for something this strong. Nice, but nothing special.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brown that was black in the glass with slight orange highlights in the light and a small, tan head that left fair lacing. The aroma was roasted malt, milk and dark chocolate, oat, chocolate syrup, moderate pine hops, and a little alcohol. The flavor stared very sweet and a little bitter and finished fairly bitter with a little sweetness with a long duration. There was roasted malt, chocolate, oat, dark fruit, chocolate syrup, pine hops and a little alcohol. The medium to full body was oily, but also sticky on the lips with tingly carbonation and alight to moderate alcoholic finish.
