COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“brewed for the harvest” This beer begins in spring when oat seeds are sown as soon as the soil can be worked. Meanwhile, select types of barley are planted with hopes that Mother Nature will be kind. Our brewers wait patiently until the legumes are mature and ready for the scythe. Upon delivery to the brewery, these ingredients are mixed together in the mash tun where they steep, creating a rich molasses-like liquid. Spicy hops are boiled with the thick brew, giving balance and complexity. Brewers yeast feasts upon the rich sugars, concluding its transformation into oatmeal stout. Pour Oat into a snifter, allow its thick tan head to slowly rise, releasing unbridled aromas. The color of Oat is as dark as a moonless night. The first sip reveals Oat’s thick and nourishing taste. Like a haversack to a horse, a bottle of this stout is a meal in itself. Enjoy responsibly. 11.0% abv • 238º L

Southern Tier Oat, finally available in South Florida!! Poured into a Dogfish snifter it came out really smooth and thick. Jet black with a pretty looking brown, bubbly head with a good amount of retention. The aroma held hints of dark chocolate, roasted malts, and oats as well. I wasn’t blown away by the aroma, but I was still pleased. The flavors are just as the aroma suggests. Chocolate, coffee, and a little bit oaty. Out of the other imperial stouts they have (Javha,Creme Brulee, Mokha, Choklat) I’d say that this is probably the least exciting out of them all.

Bottle, kindly shared by David Løite. Near black body with brown edges and a ring of tiny tan bubbles clinging to the glass. Soft and fat dark malts on the nose. Smell of dark bread, black choco/cocoa and a rounded roastedness. Taste is moderately sweet with a strong malt body. Rounded and complex flavor of chocolate, English licorice, roast and coffe. Bitterness for balancing only. No disturbing alcohol. Full-bodied. Thick and smooth in the mouth. Very good indeed.

Bottle. Black pour, no head. A strong cocoa aroma first up, followed by lots of roasted barley and oat, chocolatey. Taste is quite rich, quite heavy, syrupy sweet chocolate, oat bitterness. Palate is really syrupy, low carbonation. Good, but a real heavy sipper

2007 Vintage. Purchased at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo a little over 13 months ago. Luscious chocolatey aroma with a nice roastiness. There are some definite hints of oxidation starting to come through, but it works fine with this particular beer. I also get some underlying molasses aromas. Nicely aromatic. Opaque, inky black body with a smallish tan head. Starts a bit sweet and chocolately, before some husky malts come through in the middle. Lots of roastiness with a little astringency later on. Still rather ethanolic and hot. Lots of burnt notes later on. This is still a little brash, and I cannot imagined what this would have tasted like fresh.

Pours a nearly black, clear, dark brown with a 3 finger, creamy tan head that has poor retention. Aroma is roast, chocolate, cooked oatmeal cereal, sweet malts, light caramel and some spicy and soapy hops. Flavor is chocolate, oat notes ranging from toasted cut oats to sweetened gooey oatmeal cereal, chocolate milk, light soapy hops, a touch of roasted nuts and an odd, citrus hop note toward the finish. Palate is thick, sticky and pretty dry to the finish with an appropriately semi-light carbonation. I definitely enjoyed this beer, probably my favorite Southern Tier to date.

Bottle thanks to Tom. 2008 Fall vintage. Pours and oily black with no head. Aroma of heavy chocolate , coffee, roasted malts, sugar and alcohol. Taste of semi sweet chocolate, coffee, licorice, molasses and hints of wood and hops. Wow this is hearty, a sipper for sure. Alcohol is there but not to bad. Good stuff.

The aroma is very strong with coffee, oats, molasses, chocolate, and hops. The appearance is almost black with a large head. The taste is like the aroma with a burnt coffee oat finish. The palate is smooth. Overall this is an interesting beer but not that great.
