kyzr (1119), Belgrade, Montana, USA Nov 29, 2008 Bottle from jjpm74. Pours dark brown with good sized brown head. Nose is toasted malt with chocolate. Flavor is rich with chocolate and roasted malt and a touch of dark coffee. I am still suprised how the high alcohol is hidden so well. JaBier (1126), Capital City, Ohio, USA Nov 28, 2008 22oz bottle. I hear this version is a bit toned down in the ABV compared to years past. Pours black with a minimal tan head. Malty aroma with presences of chocolate and alcohol. Flavor is of roasted barley with a coffee/alcohol finish. Pretty good now, but can’t wait to taste it in a year. Trev (847), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Nov 27, 2008 pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. slight fruity sourness initially in the aroma, some hints of alc... Definitely get the oats coming through and a cocoa-chocolate. Flavour was sweet malt, toffee, transitioning to roasted coffee, some boozy stickiness and a hint of licorice. Finishes with a light lingering bitterness. Pretty darn good. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Nov 21, 2008 9/27/2007: Southern Tier Oat does not disappoint! It has a perfect appearance (thick pour, near black color, opaque, dark brown head). The aroma has dark, deep, rich chocolate and roasted malt/char along with undertones of sweet candy and coffee. The flavor is ladden with caramelized malt, sweet citrus candy, a touch of licorice, and some alcohol. The alcohol is like a barrel-aged flavor and it goes right down! The finish is kinds of dry. This full-bodied beer is thick, syrupy, and heavy and coats the entire mouth. When warmer, this beer becomes super creamy and lots of creamy oat flavor is evident. More alcohol comes out and it also becomes sticky and chewy. Overall this beer is quite sweet for an Oatmeal Stout, but awesome nonetheless!
22 fl. oz. bottle shared by Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Rating #467 for this beer.
JLAudio (282), Crestwood, Illinois, USA Nov 21, 2008 I must say this is one of the only southern tier beers I truly enjoy. It has a great round presence, full of oatmeal flavor, roasted malts, semi-sweetened chocolate, and cocao. I must say this beer is too drinkable, considering the 11% ABV...I guess that’s not a bad thing. phishpond417 (1861), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Nov 20, 2008 Pours a dark brown colour with a reddish tint near the bottom. HEad is very small, very little carbonation in this beer. Taste is pleasent, rich with dark roasted malts and coffee beans. Aroma is strong of dark fruits, black licorice adn toffee. bp (443), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 20, 2008 Bottle: pours a dark black with a thick, frothy tan head, aroma of coffee, chocolate, malt, taste is very smooth, some chocolate, malts, coffee and a mellow bitterness in the finish, medium mouthfeel. Glad I finally got to try this one. fata2683 (827), Panama City, Florida, USA Nov 20, 2008 Bottle, tasted as part of an Imperial Stout tasting(ended up 4th of 4) Pours dark brown/black with a very thin head that did not last. Light coffee nose, dark cherry and some sweet/dark malts. Taste is sharp and bitter with an expresso bittering finish. Mouth is creamy and full of pig flavors with a light alcohol burn. Not as thick as other RIS but still solid and delicious.
