phishpond417 (1861), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Nov 20, 2008 Pours a dark brown colour with a reddish tint near the bottom. HEad is very small, very little carbonation in this beer. Taste is pleasent, rich with dark roasted malts and coffee beans. Aroma is strong of dark fruits, black licorice adn toffee. bp (451), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 20, 2008 Bottle: pours a dark black with a thick, frothy tan head, aroma of coffee, chocolate, malt, taste is very smooth, some chocolate, malts, coffee and a mellow bitterness in the finish, medium mouthfeel. Glad I finally got to try this one. fata2683 (836), Panama City, Florida, USA Nov 20, 2008 Bottle, tasted as part of an Imperial Stout tasting(ended up 4th of 4) Pours dark brown/black with a very thin head that did not last. Light coffee nose, dark cherry and some sweet/dark malts. Taste is sharp and bitter with an expresso bittering finish. Mouth is creamy and full of pig flavors with a light alcohol burn. Not as thick as other RIS but still solid and delicious. cloudstrife (50), Rochester, New York, USA Nov 19, 2008 22oz bottle poured into glass. Pitch black color with a tannish orange head which dissipated to the edge of the glass. Aroma of caramel malts with a hint of chocolate or molasses. Fairly sweet in flavor which is surprising for a beer this dark, oaty aftertaste. Very rich and full on the palate. Little rough on the palate when compared side by side with Stone Russian Imperial Stout. Overall a really good sipping beer from Southern Tier. tomthompson89 (1459), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 19, 2008 Had on tap at Cole’s buffalo NY. Dark brown almost black, some nice tan head, nose is coffee, chocolate and some dark berries. Flavor is cocoa, molassis, roasted malt with some lingering hops in the finish Dogbrick (2813), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 19, 2008 On draught at Barley’s Smokehouse. The beer pours a deep black color with a medium thick dark tan head that recedes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate malt, espresso and hops. Rich, smooth body with flavors of cocoa, coffee and roasted malt, along with some moderately bitter hops. Oats are subtle throughout. The finish is roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Solid all around. ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA Nov 18, 2008 Bottle from Sean. Much like how he test drives amps and beers, I took a sip, savored it for 20 minutes, and dumped the rest of the bottle. The Smitty way. Pours out (into my teaspoon), a black color with a nice tan head on it. Smell is full of oats and chocolate, coffe and some sugars. The smell is good but the real highlight is the way this thing tastes. It is probably one of the thickest beers I have ever drank. This is certainly a meal in a bottle. Chocolate, oats, coffee, its all there in large quantities. This stuff is really good, too bad I only drank 1/16th of an oz of it. blutt59 (2042), Dallas, Texas, USA Nov 18, 2008 bottle, thick dark brown pour, dirty brown head, aromas of chocolate and oatmeal, flavor of chocolate, dark fruits, vinous body with an alcohol chlorine like presence
