LooseCannon (914), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Sep 19, 2008 22oz bottle, Brewed fall 2008. Pours dark brown in color with brown head. Aroma sweet coffee and dark chocolate. Taste dark chocolate bitter, roasted coffee. oak and lite wiskey with bitter finish. 17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 16, 2008 Pours a dark black with a small creamy beige head. Thick sweet aroma of lots of oat, some soy, vinous, light raisin, dark fruit, vanilla , maple syrup and chocolate. FIrst taste is lots of sugary alcohol, vanilla and sweet oatmeal followed by bitter licorice and dark chocolate, finishing back with sweet oatmeal. Pretty oily flavor/texture. Slightly burnt tasting, some soy/vegetable. Lingering licorice/dark chocolate taste, a bit tannic. This tastes more like a Black Russian than a beer. Lots of alcohol in the finish... Creamy full body with fine sizzling carbonation. There are much better oatmeal stouts... like Boris.... of course mine is fresh.. but I can’t imagine the off-flavors getting any better with age, but we shall see. A meal for sure... good-luck finishing a whole bottle. Lots of great qualities... but just a bit out of balance. MuttyD (93), Cambridge, USA Sep 12, 2008 Deep, dark black/brown pour. Thin tan head that disappears within minutes. Roasted malts, caramel, coffee, molasses (huge molasses), bitter and sticky. Very smooth on the palate. Bitter finish. (Rating #1949) thegreenrooster (1811), St.louis, Missouri, USA Sep 10, 2008 Pour is black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted oats with some bitter chocolate and coffee. Flavor is more creamy with some vanilla, chocolate and molasses. After the swallow it leaves a bitter burnt sensation on the tounge. For 11% the alcohol is no problem. Another extremely heavy but tasty beer from Southern Tier. patrick767 (2016), fort wayne, Indiana, USA Sep 7, 2008 bottle - Pours thick and nearly black with a thin tan head. The aroma is full of oatmeal, dark roasted malt and chocolate. The big chocolate malt flavor has enough hops to give it balance. It’s full bodied and very enjoyable. rocbyter (902), Waterbury, Connecticut, USA Sep 3, 2008 Malt aroma with lots of alcohol. Opaque brown color with some brown foam. Very sweet beginning that fades lightly in the finish. Alcohol and oat in the end. Palate is creamy and alcohol does not have and overpowering burn. robinvboyer (1419), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada Sep 3, 2008 jet black pour with a tiny coffee head that didnt last very long. Aroma is a slap in the face, loads of rosty malt, and the typical full bodied oatmeal aroma. Loads of chocolate, some smoke, mollasses, and soy sauce. Flavour is very full bodied, lots of roastiness, some chocolate, and a big boozy note. the alcohol isvery present, and add lots of warming. A very very nice winter beer, so rich.............its like a bloody meal.
