| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Apr 7, 2008 Bottle. Huge chocolaty aroma with a firm alcohol presence and a little roast and lactose. Pitch pour with a fizzy, noisy dark brown head. Taste is slightly bitter yet sweet (sugary and near-cloying) with lots of roast and a somewhat dryer, roast aftertaste. Chest feels warm after just the first sip. Molasses flavors and light plummy notes, gourmet chocolate and faint berry/cherry. Is that a wisp of smoke? Just a touch of coffee/espresso, but by far the coffee/roast is not the key tone here (that would be chocolat/eplum). Dried fruit in general, not quite fig. Fruitcake. Full, obese body, easily one of the thickest beers I’ve ever tasted, so much body that I had to gulp to get it down. Alcohol is a bit raw, and perhaps better suited to rubbing, but it’s not really a problem in small quantities. Subtle it’s not but its decadent flavor is more than enough for me. An unexpectedly amazing beer. dchmela (1426), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 7, 2008 Thanks to hoplover406 for this. Pours a thick black with a taught dark tan head. Chocolate malt, oatmeal, spicy hops, roasted grain aroma. Taste is thick and chewy with hints of sweet malt, chocolate malt, oatmeal and hops. Finishes with a little bit of chocolate. Nicely carbonated, just enough to not make it sludge. Makes a very nice after dinner drink. GriffinAvenue (396), Winchester, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 5, 2008 Draft. opaque black-tan coloring. Static, creamy, tannish brown head. Marshmeellow creamy Lucky charms-ish aroma. Faint roasted nut elements. Wondrous 2-part flavoring. Malty, creamy marshmellow initial blast that gives way to date, raisin, wine-like finish. A class act all the way. WisconsinBeer (521), St Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 5, 2008 Thick black color. Decent head. Flavor is dark roasted malt, a bit of oatmeal, some chocolate. Palate is thick as hell and chewy. Somewhat sweet, alcohol is well hidden. Damn, this is like drinking a bowl of oatmeal. Crazy. Tripplebrew (493), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Apr 5, 2008 Pours a very dark brown/black coal color. It pours close to no head. What is there, is light tan lacing. Aroma is heavy malts, espresso and thick roasted malts. Flavor is dark chocolate and espresso. Body is medium, lighter than expected, with low carbonation. Flavor is incredibly rich and malty. Intense, flavorful surprise. blklab2007 (955), Connecticut, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 4, 2008 22 oz bottle poured into a snifter has a black color with active carbonation and a dark tan head with great thickness. aroma has malt, chocolate, oat, coffee, and some alcohol. taste is thick malts, chocolate, bitter coffee, sweetness, and some chewy oats. the mouth feel is well carbonated and thick just coating the tongue and hanging on. really full strength in every regard and the alcohol at 11% is noted but not overwhelming and makes me see why they toned it down a notch. i thought being an imperial oatmeal it would be a bit creamier but this is chock full of coffee, chocolate, and bitters. has a nice warming as it is enjoyed.
