jcr (1136), Jasper, Indiana, USA Sep 7, 2009 Bomber. This beer gets your attention from the outset with its opaque black body and quickly receding tan head. Malts dominate the aroma — sweet chocolate, caramel, roasted grain, molasses with notes of licorice and maple sugar. There are hints of resin and grapefruit that are more noticable in the tasting, but it’s hard for them to compete with such a big malt bill. The flavor is heavily sweet and moderately bitter. It finishes moderately to heavily sweet and moderately bitter. A slight alcohol pepperiness pushes forward in the finish as well. Full body with velvety texture turning sticky in the finish and soft carbonation. With its thick sweet malts, this would be a candidate for "way too sweet." Not so, the balance of bitter and alcohol helps hold the malts in check. Still, a single glass is a full meal. Not quite as refined as the very best, but almost. Jayb0 (750), Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA Aug 31, 2009 Breakfast lunch and dinner wrapped into one satisfying, gut and head filling experience. smooth, ganache, oat, some coffee, warm, share. noncaloric (601), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Aug 26, 2009 Pours red-brown, black in the glass, with a tall, dark brown head. Aroma is a whiff of chocolate and molasses, but just a whiff. Flavor is overt alcohol floating over a malt body burnt to a blackstrap molasses, with enough chocolate elements to avoid overt astringency. Very full bodied. Despite the large head, feels somewhat still on the palate. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 26, 2009 Interesting aroma of chocolate, roasted malt and oats. Pours a black color with brown highlights and a thin light brown head. Very good flavor of chocolate, roasted malt and oats over a light to medium body and very smooth, comfy texture. It’s solid stuff, the alcohol always remains hidden. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 21, 2009 In short: A big full bodied boozy velvety oat beer that drinks easier that it should. Almost excellent
How: Bottle 22oz. Many times, fresh to 1 year old, not much difference
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head
In long: Nose of a hot chocolate without the warm fumes. Light-medium roastiness. Superb rich velvety body. Flavours of milk chocolate, oat, molasses, ots of caramel and toffee, a little boozy. Very low on the fruity side of things, I must have drank 3 bottles by myself and I never could pick a single fruit flavour. There’s something that resembles green grass in there but overall the beer could have used a little more hops. Sweetness seems adequate at first but feels a bit heavy when drinking a full bottle. Very good a but a bit cloying when drinking. Half a bottle is how to enjoy that beer. I will share it with a friend at the next opportunity. Next time I have a friend. monkeychugg55 (213), Joliet, Illinois, USA Aug 18, 2009 Pours a thick blackish brown with a small tan head. The aroma is loaded with roasted oats, chocolate, coffee, anise, and a hint of vanilla. The flavor is sweet chocolate, roasted oats, and coffee. Thick and velvety mouthfeel, with a long soft finish. Alcohol is amazingly well hidden. jkwalking05 (1483), Arlington, Texas, USA Aug 18, 2009 Black in color with a decent sized tan head. Aroma is of roasted malts, lots of oat, chocolate and vanilla.
