Commercial Description:
“brewed for the harvest” This beer begins in spring when oat seeds are sown as soon as the soil can be worked. Meanwhile, select types of barley are planted with hopes that Mother Nature will be kind. Our brewers wait patiently until the legumes are mature and ready for the scythe. Upon delivery to the brewery, these ingredients are mixed together in the mash tun where they steep, creating a rich molasses-like liquid. Spicy hops are boiled with the thick brew, giving balance and complexity. Brewers yeast feasts upon the rich sugars, concluding its transformation into oatmeal stout. Pour Oat into a snifter, allow its thick tan head to slowly rise, releasing unbridled aromas. The color of Oat is as dark as a moonless night. The first sip reveals Oat’s thick and nourishing taste. Like a haversack to a horse, a bottle of this stout is a meal in itself. Enjoy responsibly. 11.0% abv • 238º L

Blind tasting at Papsoe. Black colour with a dense light brown head. Great aroma of rye-bread, chocolate, sugar and raostedness. Fantastic flavour of roastedness, chocolate, alcohol sugar and siryp.

Thanks to Secret Santa for this one! Pours a very nice deep black, faint brown at edges, deep brown head rises up and slowly fades. Aroma of chocolate, alcohol, and some citric hops that are a bit surprising. Flavor is rich chocolate malts, somewhat of a rubbing alcohol sensation of alchol warmth, and slightly medicinal hop note on the finish. Smooth mouthfeel, probably an oat byproduct. Unfortunately for me, the alcohol simply doesnt’ integrate well with the rest of the brew, almost standing as a barrier between the chocolate character of the malts and the hops on the finish. Lingering roast malt flavors stick around afterward. Couldn’t get into this one, although I can see how some folks really enjoy it.

This one is nearly pitch black, showing the darkest possible mahogany when backlit. A small, bubbly, light brown head leaves behind virtually no lacing. The aroma is loaded with dark chocolate, oatmeal, and tons of vanilla. Stewed raisons add a hint of fruitiness. The chocolaty flavors rival those of this brew’s cousin, the Choklat, and that is really saying something. I can’t get over the amount of vanilla I picked up. This beer is very flavorful, well blended, and lighter than the 11% ABV indicates. Full, silky body. Dangerously drinkable. Southern Tier knows Imperial Stout. Great brew.

Bottle. Pitch black pout with a very dark brown thick luscious head, which lasts for a good amount of time. Heavy aromas of toasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and oat. Flavous is similar with a hard punch to the gut with the alcohol! Very exciting and complex brew. This is my 2nd Southern Tier and thus far I have not been let down! I have the Choklat next....

ST just keeps doin it! Poured deep black with a foamy brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, oat(go figure), and coffee. Flavor was amazing with oat, chocolate, and a nice coffee ending. This would be even better if aged in burbon barrels...mmmmmm!

Bottle from a great Ratebeerian, sent as a housewarming gift: Thanks again Winston. Pours dark with whafts of alcohol right out of the gate. I let it warm a bit and was rewarded nicely. Like a good Impy should be, it was plenty complex and tasty. It wasn’t anywhere near as talented as its brother Choklat at hiding the high ABV but still a good brew.

A nice beer from Southern Tier (when do they not make good beer). A nice roasty aroma, with coffee, sweet malts and chocolate taking center stage. Flavor was dark chocolate, dark fruits, coffee and molasses. A smooth, velvety mouthfeel due in part to the oatmeal I’m sure. Not the best out there, but really tasty.

Bottled. Deep brown colour, close to black, not much head. Aroma is sweet malts, licorice, some mild roast as well as coffee and chocolate in a really nice balance. Flavour is the same along with some mildly stinging alcohol. Good stout, which is wellbalanced.
