riversideAK (2648), Shoreline, Washington, USA Feb 2, 2008 Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma is sweet roast with a touch of smoke. Sweet chocolate roast. Definite oat sweetness. A little caramel roast. Sweet roast and chocolate. Good sweetness in this one. Oatmeal is noticeable. Lingering roast with a touch of bittering hops. Thick, almost syrupy body with noticeable booze. Good stuff. blipp (1631), Newark, New Jersey, USA Feb 2, 2008 22 oz. Bottle. Pours black with a thin tan head. Roasted malt aroma with some notes of smoke and sweet chocolate. A bit of caramel comes through as well. Pretty full body. Flavor is excellent with notes of roasted malt, burnt marshmallow, caramel, chocolate, and oatmeal. Hop presence gives it a bit of a fruity character. All of these combine to give it that perfect bitter/sweet quality. 11%ABV is hardly noticeable. A very tasty beer. thehinge (244), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Feb 1, 2008 Slides like syrup down the side of the glass....this is a viscous beverage. Brown head. Obscures all light when you look through it. Awesome aroma and flavor. Roast and chocolate in the aroma. Front end brings a welcome taste of chocolate and roasted grains. Mild bitterness in the finish. Outstanding Cryotek (206), Pawtucket, Rhode Island, USA Feb 1, 2008 Updated: Feb 2, 2008I went a little overboard with a high pour which made for a huge brown head that almost does not go away! A black color with brown tint. The large head made for a lasting, stronger scent, it was a very nice light chocolatey scent, with grainy and roasty notes. Tastes mildly roasty chocolate, just enough sweetness for a non-sweet stout, almost a dark choc taste, with a touch of sugar witch hides the alc% nicely untill you’ve noticed the nice warming feel after you’ve finished. Some other sweet notes of either vanila or mable syrup. Someone mentioned rye bread flavors which i agree with, which might be the oat notes i’m supposed to notice, and also a hint of bitter hops in the finish along with roasty sweet aftertaste. After drinking a whole bottle, i have noticed that the sweetness is really starting to stand out thru the entire tasting, very tasty. I can understand that some people who do not like sweet beers would give this a bad rating, but i love it. A very enjoyable stout, their entire line of stouts are amazing, and this is no exception. Great beer! SDbruboy (1832), San Diego, California, USA Feb 1, 2008 Updated: Feb 2, 200822 oz. bottle, from drewbeerme - thanks for this yummy! Pours opaque and ebony brown, with a thin ring of bubbles. Aroma of raisins, coffee, dark chocolate, prunes and floral hops with alcohol discernable as well. Flavor is rich and delicious, roasty malts, bittersweet chocolate fudge, espresso, molasses and more prune, again the alcohol is evident along with floral notes and hints of herbs - almost perfect to me. Full, round and milky body, with gentle carbonation. Very good and lives up to the hype. LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 30, 2008 Man am I sick of this style, but it sure is good when I get started on one. Aroma was huge. Chocolate malt and alcohol with a heavy vinuous feel. Pour was a dark thick black with a thin tan ring for a head. Taste was thick and chewy. Strong chocolate and oatmeal in the front with a sweet Coco Pebbles aftertaste. Hides the 11% well. I swore I would not like this as I don’t care for this style any more, but man this is hard to hate. ChazMania (408), Pasadena, California, USA Jan 29, 2008 Bomber. This pours really nicely, thick and opaque. Big sweet aroma very syrup like with malt chocolate and mild oatmeal. The flavor is big and complex it’s very easy to drink considering the high alcohol content. This is my first beer from Southern Tier and I hope to encounter others! tennisjoel (931), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Jan 29, 2008 Nice aroma. Smooth palate. Very easy drinking for an 11% brew. I enjoyed this beer quite a bit, and it was impressive after experiencing Dark Lord for the second time.
In fact, some of the non ratebeerians at my tasting preferred this over DL as it isn’t quite as rich or challenging. IMHO, not as good as DL but still very solid nonetheless.
