Commercial Description:
“brewed for the harvest” This beer begins in spring when oat seeds are sown as soon as the soil can be worked. Meanwhile, select types of barley are planted with hopes that Mother Nature will be kind. Our brewers wait patiently until the legumes are mature and ready for the scythe. Upon delivery to the brewery, these ingredients are mixed together in the mash tun where they steep, creating a rich molasses-like liquid. Spicy hops are boiled with the thick brew, giving balance and complexity. Brewers yeast feasts upon the rich sugars, concluding its transformation into oatmeal stout. Pour Oat into a snifter, allow its thick tan head to slowly rise, releasing unbridled aromas. The color of Oat is as dark as a moonless night. The first sip reveals Oat’s thick and nourishing taste. Like a haversack to a horse, a bottle of this stout is a meal in itself. Enjoy responsibly. 11.0% abv • 238º L

Black in colour, rich lingering tan coloured head, light lacing. The aroma is alcoholic, quite sweet, some liquorice, lots of piney hops, vinous, dark chocolate. The flavour is very oaty, lots of alcohol, some chocolate, very rich and somewhat smooth, some espresso, very sweet. Thick and rich mouthfeel, large body, medium carbonation. Finishes very long, with a large alcohol warmth. This is a big stout, very in your face. Drinking this makes me want Jah-va even more.

A Sim rate (bottle at ChrisO’s): Intoxicating stout aroma, yet chocolate, yet brandy. So alcoholic, but so sweetly plummy. Strong, malty flavour with sherry and Bailey’s. Chocolate, caramel with a finish that slinks down your throat like a warm, melting rolo.

A Mes rate: Bottle at HogTownHarry Fest ’08
Straight forward but very welcoming black and tan looks. A huge fat slew of malt in the nose with alcohol, oats and cereal. Similar flavour. Decent stuff but has this papery and unbrewed malt thing going on that kicks it out of balance if you ask me. Much too thick on the palate. Hugely over-rated.

Started to drink this one immediately after finishing a Choklat. This tastes like the same exact beer without the chocolate overtones. The malt is just about the same, the color is the same. The head lingers more, & the alcohol comes through a bit more in the end. It also smells a bit more sour (the oat mash?) in the end. A very, very good beer overall, but if one had to choose, the Choklat should be the choice.

22 oz. bottle - correctly described on the the bottle as pours a thick black with nice tan head; big nose with lots of bitterness that overwhelms the malt, chocolate and oatmeal mix; had me concerned that i should have let this sit for a few months; fears were gone at first sip though as there was no bitterness at all; rich chocolate flavors are creamy and chewy; very smooth with slight alcohol burn; ymmm, just fantastic!!

Small sample from 22 oz. bottle consumed at tennisjoel’s tasting on 1-26-08. Labeled as “Southern Tier Imperial Oat.” This was the ninth of ten beers that we tried. Thanks to Joel for sharing this beer and to ElGaucho for bringing him a bottle from Chicago. Sweet aroma of mocha, milk chocolate, and caramel. Pours a dark brown with an amber to gold hue and a small amount of tan head. The taste is dry and bitter at first but becomes sugary sweet, like a strong sweet stout (which, essentially, it is). Caramel flavor. Full body. Smooth in the palate, as one would expect from an oatmeal ale. Nice texture. I’m sure this beer is suffering in my ratings from the fact that I consumed it soon after trying 2007 Dark Lord. The more casual beer drinkers at the tasting actually preferred this to Dark Lord, for whatever that’s worth.

Bottle. Pours stout black with some tan head. Aroma is full of roasted malt, oats, and some chocolate. Taste follows suit, with more roast and oats tickling the tongue. Just lovely. Pretty full mouthfeel and not much alcohol to be noticed here. I thought this went down rather well, perhaps a little too well given the strength. This was really quite tasty, and an awesome value too.

Bottle shared by MaxxDaddy. Had this a couple other times as well, finally getting around to rating it. This is a hell of a beer, miraculously thick and chewy, with a very strong oat presence and very deep malts. A touch hard to drink. Roast is over the top, in a good way. Delicious.

Another awesome beer by souther tier. Super dark, almost oil like. This beer has great flavor and goes down smoothly. Sneaky strong, this beer will put you on your arse... because you can not taste the alcohol. I had a growler of this with a thanksgiving meal and it was more popular than the turkey!****Just had an 07 bottle.... Texture was slick and oily. Taste lost its intial oat (sandpaper) feel but had the oat taste along with the roasted maltiness... Great beer to watch the phillies come back in the 9th inning to win (10-12-2009)
