tytoanderso (1382), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Jan 16, 2008 22oz bottle provided by Stine at the MN RB Winter Gathering. Further proves why Southern Tier is one of my favorite East Coast breweries. Aroma of chocolate, rich, creamy roasted malt, thick oatmeal with just a hint of smoke and alcohol. Pours thick and oily, nearly opaque with a tiny but thick khaki head. Quite rich and lush on the palate. Roasted but not bitter malt, toasted marshmallow, chocolate covered dark cherries, charred oak and smoke. Creamy with good carbonation. Fairly thick and chewy. Nice stuff. acertain (249), Seattle, Washington, USA Jan 15, 2008 Don’t recall who traded me this bottle, but props out to some generous ratebeerian (and if it was you, let me know so that I can give you credit). Pours a jet black with almost no head (what is there is tan). Aroma is malty, with hints of coffee, and just a hint of metal. In the mouth, it’s divine, soft and lush. It’s sweet, but not overpoweringly so, with interesting chocolate and other fruity/malty/stout-y notes. I don’t know how somebody drinking the beer I drank got thin and boozy, but I totally understand the metallic complaints. For me though, the metallic notes disappeared after I got it in my mouth. Kevin (1917), Colorado, USA Jan 14, 2008 bottle from mrmanning/hogtownharry. solid black with an orange brown head. blackberry schmnapps nose with something mint like. a bit oxidized. very hot. lots of prune. tastes like leaves burning. coppery watery finish. a lasting tang. not my beer, but others really liked it. too thin, and the booze is too dominant.
5 2 5 2 10 csbosox (1076), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Jan 13, 2008 11% 22oz bottle. Hopped with Columbus & Willamette, not the Chinook & Columbus listed on the this sites commercial description. Served in a NB snifter. Oat, roast, dark fruits, floral, licorice aromas all present. Mouthfeel is silky smooth, with the oats contribution very evident. Nearly black with a small, mocha colored head and lots of lacing. Taste is roast, dark fruits, licorice, fine dark chocolate & earthy, floral and to a much lesser extent citrusy hops. There is a lot of sweetness in the beginning but the finish ends up being nicely balanced without coming across as too bitter or roasty. This beer is truly a joy to drink and as I recall, was an incredible bargain. badgerben (3587), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Jan 13, 2008 Updated: Oct 22, 2008MN Ratebeer Winter Gathering, January 12, 2008. I ’think’ Stine brought this one. Black color with no head. Strong, sweet oat aroma. The taste was very metallic and astringent. Beyond that, the predictable oat and dark chocolate malt flavors show up. It’s hard to get past the metal for me. 7/3/6/3/14 Re-Rating, October 21, 2008: Totally different experience this time. Black color with no head. Sweet malt aroma, along with lactose and fresh oats. A light, roasty malt up front, turning into sweet malt and light grain flavors. Very light oat taste and the lactose kind of fades, but it’s there enough to keep this dull sweetness lingering. Once it gets around cellar temperature, some chocolate pokes out. Very nice. BDR (2139), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Jan 12, 2008 Nice oatmeal stout nose. Solid body with nice oatmeal body. Smooth finish. Thanks to whomever ratman197 (3141), Arvada, Colorado, USA Jan 12, 2008 Bomber (thanks to Kevin for sharing) poured a translucent brownish black with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of light oxidation, bitter chocolate, coffee, lighjt vanilla and a hin t of carmel. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of milk chocolte, vanilla, coffee and a hin t of licorice with a smooth lingering bittersweet finish. elmatador00 (518), j-action-ville, North Carolina, USA Jan 12, 2008 Courtesy of Dragonstout. WOW. Pours a dark brown, almost black. Has a small tan creamy head. Hints a chocolate, coffee, sweet oatmeal, sweet dark fruits. Finished with a creamy thick sweet taste on the tongue. Very impressed. This is one of my favorite RIS now.
