SuperDave70 (1157), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA May 4, 2009 Bottle courtesy of Bockyhorsey, thanks Bill! Deep black pour with a creamy tan head that sticks around. Lots of roasted malt and dark fruit with a bit of chocolate and oatmeal. Flavor is not as sweet as expected, but still rich and roasty. A bit thick and silky smooth on the palate. Really good stuff! GodOfThunder (855), Orlando, Florida, USA May 4, 2009 Nice stout from Southern Tier. Pours thick with a thick head, as it should. Flavors are bold and rich, without going overboard like some of the other Southern Tier stouts. This is good drinking at 11%. SuIIy (1406), Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, USA May 3, 2009 22oz bottle. Pours a dark black color with a very minimal tan head. Head is a small ring of foam lacing the glass. Nose is dark malts and chocolate. A very nice, mild flavor of dark malts, bitter chocolates. Leaves a slight film on the tongue. FlssmrBrewAlum (1061), Lisle, Illinois, USA May 2, 2009 22 oz bottle from a ways back, likely Binnys (Orland Park, IL). Finally popping this! Pours a pitch black opaque pour, small tannish head that dissipates to a film, laces a bit. Aromas push a sweeter side, roasted malts pushed into an oatmeal sweetness, like oatmeal cookies, coupled with pretty big caramel and with some light chocolate and creaminess. Can’t complain about that. Initial is thick and syrupy initially, oatmeal sweetness, caramel, chocolate, and some coffee notes nestled into the roasted malts. Flavors are good, sweet overall with some faint dark fruit. A bit much for me, but a very nice brew. Finish leaves some roast, coffee, and chocolate in the aftertase, bitterness is sufficient. Too big for me, but a very good brew. BroSpud (583), , Massachusetts, USA May 1, 2009 22oz bottle. For whatever reason this one falls right in my wheelhouse. Really like this one, even more so than their Jah-va and Choklat versions. It has the right amount of bitterness without all the sweetness. Very rich and velvety. Delicious. Lots of different tastes, chocolate, raisin, etc perfectly balanced. Well done. Indra (2018), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA May 1, 2009 22oz. bottle. Inviting sweet, creamy, chocolate aroma, lightly roasty and toffeeish with notes of raisin, plum, cocoa and dark bread. Opaque ebony color with a largely subsiding, tan head. Flavor is very nicely balanced between the sweetness, chocolate, creamy oats, dark fruits and spicy hops, showing only faint traces of the excessive alcohol content, and finishing long, bitter and roasty. Nicely smooth and thick mouthfeel, gently warming with moderate effervescence. Somehow rather drinkable, for all its strength and depth, and remarkably good overall. JMerritt (1313), Macomb, Illinois, USA Apr 26, 2009 Pitch black, small thin brown ring of a head. Leaves thin, yellow film as you swirl. Smokey nose with cocoa powder and milk chocolate. Hoppy/earthy flavor, loads of cocoa and alcohol. Toasty grains hit towards the end of the flavor profile. Dangerously delicious. Appearance: Pours a black, thick-looking body with a thin, khaki-colored head. Lovely legs on this one!
Smell: Full nose smelling of dark malts, with chocolate sauce, and oats, natch. All layered beneath crusted chunks of dark, gooey sugar.
Taste: Heavily sugared, chocolate-coated oats slide and smear over the tongue along with bountiful tastes of marshmallows, second molasses, humble caramel, and sweet licorice-flavored candy. There’s a huge burst of dark fruitiness early in the taste and it lasts well beyond the finish. Very faint, subdued bitterness. Transitory spiciness. Then, it’s back to the heavy, heady dessert-like flavors with a far-off, faint touch of roastiness. Finishes decidedly sweet with lasting tastes of fruit and Godiva Chocolate Liqueur. There are some warming qualities, but, for the most part, the 11% ABV goes down very, very easily.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-low carbonation. Excessively smooth, tongue-coated mouthfeel.
Drinkability: A tasty Imperial Stout that glides across one’s palette with sheer ease, though the grotesque hedonist in me is left yearning for a bottle of Choklat, oooh, or even their new Mokah. Still, it’s one I recommend.
