With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

Smell and taste is lightly malty, caramel and a bit fruity. Okay bitterness in the aftertaste that fills the upper part of the mouth to a weak moment. Okay beer. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

pours clear dark golden with a small reviving light beige orange head, minimal retention and lacing. sweetish toastiness, intriguing fruitiness - berries-plenty, a dry nutty caramel, peppery rye-like cereals, american C’s, woodsy and grassy, earthy coffee grinds, bark and pine, mint and citrus, hint of vanilla, clean yeast. light carbonation, light to medium body - oily; assertive grassy-spicy-citrusy finish. o-k.

12 oz bottle served in a pint glass (from 1 Jan. 2012 notes). Pours a clear brown with a thin off-white head. The head has rather poor retention and leaves almost no lacing lacing on the glass. A fine mix of malts and earthy hops, There’s a hint of cannabis in both the aroma and the flavor -- a reflection of the biological affinity of hops and cannabis? This "winter ale" is not spiced, at least not perceptibly so. Good, lingering, hoppy aftertaste.

Appearance: clear brassy amber with a short, creamy, almost white head and strong retention of lace. Aroma: some piney, resinous hops over a solid caramel-rye malt backbone. Taste: as the aroma indicates, with a bit of dark fruit as well. Finish: medium length, balanced between sweetish caramel malt and refreshing resinous, almost minty hops. Notes: Quite enjoyable and balanced. Seemed more like a fall IPA than an old ale, because it wasn’t overly sweet and boozy. Another solid brew from Southern Tier. Bottle from Downtown Crown, G’burg.
