With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

12oz bottle from drake party store. Clear medium amber pour with half inch white head. Moderate lacing left on the glass as it went down. Sour, pale, grassy malt aroma with hints of caramel. Smooth full bodied taste of tart bitter pine hops. The bitterness of the taste lingers in the finish and leaves the tongue dry. Not the best from southern tier but a good beer nonetheless. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Transfer from BA review on 11-26-12- Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance - Pours a mahogany color with a one finger off white head. The head has moderate retention eventually fading to give a decent level of lacing. Smell – The aroma is heavy of spices. There are strong aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Mixed with these aromas are lighter notes of a bready and caramel nature, which when mixed with the spice give a spice bread aromas. Taste – The taste starts out roasty and bready with a very light caramel sweetness and a pine hop taste. Upfront there is also some nutmeg spice with more spice flavors come to the tongue as the taste advances. After the initial taste a cinnamon and allspice flavor come to the tongue. In the end the roasted and nutmeg flavors of the brew grow stronger with the caramel fading. A clove, moe pine hop, and light alcohol flavor greet the other tastes in the end to leave a rather roasted bittered spice flavor on the tongue. Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average as well. A thicker body and a slightly lower carbonation may have better accentuated the roasted, pine hop, and spice flavors, although even while said the feel was not too bad. Overall – A pretty decent winter ale. It was a good blend of spice, roast and hop. Not bad and worth a try.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. Sweet nose of floral hops and caramel. This is a solid beer: toffee, caramel, rich floral hops, tastes like winter. The kind of grimy dark winter period where you haven’t seen the grass in a long time. Quite robust.

Clear amber pour with a tan head. The aroma has some nutmeg and allspice notes as well as a lot of toffee and caramel. The flavor is similar. There is a strong malt backbone that provides some sweetness. I get some brown sugar and nutmeg as well as a hint of grass. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

I am not quite sure what I would call this one. As of March 2014, it is classified as an old ale on RateBeer. I’d say it’s more of a big, malt-centric American amber. It pours a nice copper color with a faint whisper of a head that lasts the duration. The predominant flavor and aroma is caramel malts. It is just a bit sweet but that sweetness is balanced by earthy hops in the finish. This is a clean and well-made beer w// nothing off-putting or flavor flaws that I detect but it is really pretty uninteresting and the malt character is really just simple sweetness rather than anything with real depth. The end result is a decent but forgettable beer.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 11/30/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toast, biscuit, toffee, orange zest, floral, grass, light pine, light raisin, nuttiness, herbal, and toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good complexity of dark/bready malt and moderate hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, brown sugar, biscuit, toffee, orange zest, floral, grass, pine, herbal, light raisin, nuttiness, and toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy pine/floral bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown sugar, biscuit, toffee, orange zest, floral, grass, herbal, light pine, nuttiness, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of dark/bready malt and earthy/piney hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a light creamy and moderately sticky/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good Old ale. Good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and earthy/piney hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.
