With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

Pours a clear copper-brown from the bottle with thin tan lacy head and light lacing. Aroma of dusty malt, with slight hints of toffee. Taste follows, with a hint of booze and a bitter finish. Pretty good.

355ml bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a white head. Aroma is malty, dark fruits. Taste is not very pleasant: caramel malt and some hoppy bitterness. Roasted malt afteraste. Probably spoiled.

12oz bottle - Poured a medium brown with a white head...thinned quickly. I got a whiff of caramel, toasted nuts, and something earthy. First sip was a mixture of skunky water and malt. But it got better with detection of some spice and biscuit with a dark malt...then a bitter herb finish.

Some roasted malt and a touch of dark chocolate fades to a slight Carmel sweetness, then a hop backbone comes in. A more crisp winter ale and some decent hop flavor without huge IBUs. Dry finish, and hops linger - slight citrus and bitterness. Very nice change from honey and spice that you usually fine in this season. Low carbonation for this medium body, almost chewy brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Musty oak, burnt caramel, spicy. Malty beer with mild hop presence. Dark caramel color with a thin head. Nice weight and heft. Good winter brew. Complex.

Pours a deep copper color - semi-translucent. Nose is malt, and so is the taste. Some caramel sweetness and slight hops on the finish. Pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rich , copper color. One finger , light tanned head. Aroma of caramel malt , herbal hops and pine. Rather malty taste balanced by decent hoppy bitterness. Good ale , but I would like it more malty.

12 oz bottle that was part of the World Market Winter Brews 9 pack, courtesy of my in-laws. The pour is a clear brown copper golden with a two inch foamy light tan head. The aroma is malt, cracker, slight toast, grainy along with floral hops. The floral shows some grass as well. The taste is big on the malt; slight toast grainy along with an ever so slight toffee sweetness - all of the malt has a touch of oxidation which works with the flavors. The malt is cut mid taste by floral, spicy pine bitter hops which dry out the finish. Nice transition between the malt and the hop, though this beer is mostly about the malt. A bit of warming booze is also present in the aftertaste. The palate is medium to heavy bodied, with active carbonation and the warming bitter finish. As the beer warms, the oxidation gets a bit rougher and detracts. Still an interesting beer.

Slightly Hazy Copper Color, Huge Foamy Head, Decent Soapy Lacing. Pleasant Floral Hop Aroma. Sweet Malt, Floral Hop Bitter Finish. Medium Body, Slightly Oily. Hides ABV Real Well. Easy Drinker. Not sure about Old Ale Style, but this reminds me of west Coast Pale Ale.Very fitting in cold and abundant snow winter that we have in Chicago. Drink it to keep it warm and Stick it to the Old Man, Winter. Is that All you’ve Got?! Nice. Enjoyed It. Recommended...

bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear amber brown color, tan head that drops to a full cover, bands of lace. Aroma of fresh milled malt. Taste is a big jolt of malt that adds only a bit of fizz on the swallow before turning to very light spice and "erase everything that came before" hops. Big-bodied and malty enough to avoid spice beers, but also a little heavy.

Dark copper with not much visual carbonation. The tan head disappears fast. Aroma of malt and spice. The taste has a fair amount of hop bitterness that balances the malt with a medium body. Finishes dry with a lingering hop and spice taste.
