With the onset of winter, the brewer’s mind turns to providing warmth. For our winter seasonal, Southern Tier offers Old Man Winter Ale, a rich and complex amalgam of hops and barley that will put the feeling back in your toes and lift your spirits above the snow. Old Man Winter throws a deep and inviting hue with a thickness that clings to the glass and the warmth of an open flame. Because of its high alcohol content, Old Man Winter is a heady brew that encourages sipping and pondering its essential richness. Drink it fresh now, or cellar some bottles to see how this old man becomes wiser with age.

Thought this one was a little watery, yet balanced. Not too many notes on this one, only ratings. OK.

Bottle from Haskells. Copper. Hoppy aroma that wasn’t all that expected. Frothy head is present. Taste is mostly IPA with a minimal malt element. Floral and grassy. Caramel and toffee at the very end. It’s like an IPA ages into an old man as the sip progresses. Tip of my hat to the Old Man.

Bottle. Dark copper with white head. Nice aroma. Light maltiness, fairly heavy alcohol flavor, but done well. Hops are nice. Old man take a look at my life, I kinda like you.

BOD 9/24/14. Clear amber pour with a slight garnet cast. Outstanding massive head, lacing and retention. Very light nose of sweet malt (biscuit and caramel) with hints of tropical citrus and either plum or pear. Light medium body that has a nice oily texture. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the finish. The flavor profile is of normal intensity, fairly balanced and has a bit of complexity. It begins with hop flavor (pine and citrus rind) that flows into a medium bitterness. As the bitterness fades, mostly caramel sweetness is noted. This sweetness lingers through the finish and becomes totally caramel in nature. The finish leaves you with a nice alcohol burn at the back of the throat and a "peppery" note with a grain alcohol residual flavor.

Pours a clear darker golden color with white head. Some hop aroma on the nose, a little grass and some floral notes; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a decent amount of malt. Not a bad winter ale.

Bottle pour copper with fine white floaties. Minimal quickly disappearing head. Nose kind of generic caramel malt, minimal spice. Taste similar to nose, fairly under spiced for a winter. Mostly just the sweeter malt profile. Late mid palate faint bitterness. Some mineral and alcohol. Kind of boring flavors. Good mouth feel.

Pours clear dark amber with thin white head. Aroma is very faint malt, almost no hops on the nose. Taste is mildly sweet malt and nut flavor with some warmth. Nice seasonal.

Very pedestrian. Ugly in the glass with almost no nose. Light head. In the mouth its dirty malt. Disappointing.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Vaguely cloudy light to medium amber with a modest head. The aroma is odd. Yes, I pick up the malt characters and a clean hop bite but there is something that reminds me of peanut butter in it. They say it is complex and they don’t mention peanut butter but that is what I find. Medium body. Same with the taste - a halfway decent malt character but there is a peanut butter finish mixed in with those clean hops. Is it my imagination?
